Flintshire. Fullbrook, Bagilt: Joseph spencer
« on: Tuesday 12 October 04 20:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,

has anyome evr heard of a place in flintshire called fullbrook near Bagilt? I have a scan of the 1851 census for Oldbury west midlands showing my 4 x great grandfather joseph spencer and his family. It gives his place of birth as Flintshire, fullbrook in about 1819. He is 32 years old on the 1851 census.  Has anyone heard of fullbrook? I can see Bagilt on the map but not fullbrook?

Although I have to apologise for not being able to answer your specific query, the reason for my replying to your message, is that of my interest in the Spencer surname.I have in my tree a Cyril Spencer, who was born in the Bagillt area, between 1910 and 1920.Cyril Spencer married my Mothers sister Violet Durber, who was born in Bagillt 1914.If there is any chance that Cyril could be belonging to your spencer family, please get back in touch.

Hi russel,

no problem not answering my question, but I'm afrraid I can't answer your question either  :-\
I have only recently discovered that Joseph spencer was born in fullbrook flintshire. I've had him in my tree for four years and thanks to someone on rootsweb last week found him on the 1851 census for Oldbury. Until then I thought he was born there!

Reading between the lines it seems that Josephs father (haven't got a name for him yet) or maybe his Grandfather came from the black country to work on Halkyn mountain in the lead mines. Joseph was born in 1819 and by 1851 was in Oldbury west mids with wife and one child. I also think there maybe a possiblity that he already had a wife back home in fullbrook!!

I'm sure he would have had brothers and sisters so there is a strong possiblility that your spencers and mine are related. Have you seen this page ]                                                                                                                                                        http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northeast/sites/flintshire/pages/halkyn.shtm  l[/url]will keep your email as its too early to rules out your spencers, keep in touch and I'll let you know about any other spencers that cross my path,

Hi Tiktok

Apparently there was a Fulbrook near Holywell, which is not that far from Bagillt, but I believe that the name may have changed or it dosen't exist anymore??? Found a reference to one in the domesday book  http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/cheshire3.html saying underneath lost so?? Can't seem to find any referrence on old maps either from 1878.

Hope this helps

Hi Paul,

yes, I too found this Joseph. Problem is my joseph was born in 1819 and turns up on the 1851 census in Oldbury west midlands with wife Maria and their 2 week old daughter. Having come across  many Spencers who lied about their age I was inclined to think this must be him until I saw he had a wife called Sarah and not Maria. I wonder if he could have been a bit of a fiber as well as a biganist?

I desperateley need to find a record of my Josephs birth so that I can put a name to his parents, I'm begining to suspect this could be him. Thanks everyobe,

As I am a member of Clwyd FHS,I will visit their Resource Centre tomorrow, and see if I can find a Birth for Joseph Spencer in the Holywell Parish Records around 1819.
