Hi all, have just joined this forum and was quite excited to see other folk are interested in John Thomas Edmonds. He is my great grandfather.  He married Mary Isabel Golby and they had a number of children born in sydney, one of them being by grandfather Albert Leslie Edmonds.  He was estranged from the family (he always said that he threw a log into the river to save someone they were playing with and the other child subsequently died and that he was put into a home). Poppy was a bit of a larrikin so was probably a handful as a kid.  John Thomas Edmonds seems to have disappeard from before 1909.  Mary lived with Sydney Ernest Gaffey and had children with him from 1909.  They married in 1934. I havent been able to find out if they divorced or not.   I have sent for a Queensland Death Cert of a John Thomas Edmonds who died in 1932- it could be him.
Anyway, hope to hear from someone soon. Julie

Hi Julie,

That makes us 3rd cousins.  My great-grandmother, Edith, was John's sister.  Oh what a wonderful thing this internet is!  Where in Sydney did your grandparent's end up?  My grandmother (cousin to your poppie) was in Manly for most of her life.

I was interested to compare your info to what I've collected and see that i've got John's wife down as being Ida Mary Logan and having 8 children between 1892 and 1906.  I'll check later today at what my sources were, unfortunatley saved on my home desktop pc.

cheers

Hi, I have a marriage certificate from nsw states that on 15 aug 1878, John Thomas Edmonds married Mary Isobel Golby. John Thomas was a drover, bachelor born in beechworth Victoria. He was 28 at the
time of mariage. His parents are listed as John Edmonds (Drover) and Emma Litt.

Mary Isobel Golby (spinster) from Homebush NSW was a dressmaker 21 at the time. Her father was george golby (ganger?) and mothers name was isabel Neill.

Incidentally, i did find a death certificate for another John Thomas Edmonds who was born around the same time. He was married to Sarah formerly Langley and was a grain merchant.  He ided on 21 April 1957 at 83 years, married to Susannah surname unknown. His fathers name was John Thomas Edmonds and his mothers name was sarah formerly Langley. If your are interested I am happy to send both copies. Julie

Hello again, I also have a birth cert for a John Thomas Edmonds whose mother was Sara langley born in Hobart.   John and Sarah were married on 14 Feb  1859 and at the thime of John Thomas birth had had 6 children (4 of whom had died). I can't make out the first 2 names but they were 16 years, 10 yrs, Alice, Sarah and arthur had died already and Amelia was 2 years of age.  so... presumably this John Thomas would have a number of offspring as well. Ida Marie Edmonds filed for divorce against John Thomas in 1897. Up until then Mary Isobel Golby's kids have no father listed, once the divorce is filed they are Edmonds kids and in 1898 John marries Mary.
Seems John Thomas was off fathering kids with Mary until Ida got sick of it and divorced him.
Jag04 you mention your grandfather was put in a home. It seems my wife's Great grandfather (Arthur, Albert's brother) was also raised by someone else, as was his twin sister who has a death certificate registered but actually changed her name then went on to marry and have a child. I'm not sure what was going on in this family but it sure seems pretty wild.

Hi Julie and Paul,

I think I might have stumbled upon an answer to why the children of John Thomas might have changed their names and/or been raised somewhere other than at home.  The newspaper archives offer up a couple of articles about a John Thomas Edmonds being accused of :

An alleged assult in 1903, reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, 1 dec 1903
and the The Advertiser, Adelaide reports on the 14 July 1932 that a John Thomas Edmonds is found guilty of "Relief by false pretences", I guess that would be known as welfare fraud today.

No way of knowing exactly if this refers to the same man, but it does offer an explantion for the children not knowing a whole lot about him.  Might there be an Adelaide death for him?

I'm happy to post the clippings here, or alternatively email them to you if you message me your email addresses.

best wishes
Leanne

My gt grandpa's younger brother John David Bradshaw married  Louisa Saville (nee Mapstone) in 1910. Over a period of years they took in four unrelated girls. The first of these was Isabella Golby Edmonds, b. 1906, whose parents appear to have been John T Edmonds and Mary I Golby. No-one knows where these girls came from or how they came to be fostered out, etc. I gather that Isabella (Margaret?) later changed her name to Bradshaw and she married in the 1920S. I've searched the internet, high and low, for info about these fostered/adopted children and have drawn blanks every time. They did not come from the Randwick Destitute Children's Asylum. The Bradshaws lived in the Redfern area, so maybe the families knew each other (John and Mary were married in Redfern). I'm wondering if Mary ditched the children when she started her relationship with Sidney Gaffey? I had never heard of John David Bradshaw until I started doing my tree and no-one else knew he existed either. It's strange, isn't it? He was a bit of a naughty boy in his teens and maybe the rest of the family turned their backs on him?

Hello All,

Nice to be here!

Thanks first to greggiebear who has also sent me a message separately via ancestry.com. So much has been cleared-up/solidified via this site & from him.

Now for more good stuff.
Margaret Isobel Golby-Edmonds or "Bella" as she liked to be known was my grandmother or "Nana". She was not in touch with her family so I never met any of them, but she did confirm she had a twin, who I know now is Arthur, who she confessed to my Dad 3 years or so before she passed that he was in the Campbelltown area in Sydney's south-west - she was in her late-80s at this stage so you can imagine how bowled over everyone was!

Leanne, I think you're a 3rd cousin & Julie (jag04) a second cousin.

I'm based in inner-western Sydney, born & raised in Sydney & started to try & find out info on Nana as she was so secretive & NEVER talked of her family to her siblings & I believe they were never allowed to ask...Anyway,  started looking as a way to secure a British visa hoping she may have been born there & found out she's definitely dinky. I have several certificates including her marriage certificate to Thomas Hodgson, Catholic church Erskinville in 1926. She had 5 children, only one still surviving today.

Happy to share what I can :-)

Cheers,
Kelly (kelster)
