Hi Alord

Firstly, there are over 60 people with the surname Miller / Millar in the vicinity of Westham:

You are right, Richard is not listed, but there are now 6 Henry Millers and 3 Sarah Millers - but Charles, Caroline, Alfred and George have gone.

Sophia and Edward are still there.

Will post details as soon as I have peeled the potatoes for dinner and got the joint in the oven

Re Millers

Thanks a lot Chris, you are doing a marvellous job!
More thinking needed here!

I'm sure I will think of some more questions soon.

Enjoy your roast.

Hi alord

Think as long / often as you want - will still be here to help you.

In an earlier post you said

"Edward Miller is my GGG Grandfather".

Now that we know from the 1851 census he was born in Hailsham, will look through the 24 volumes of the 1851 census transcription to see if we can identify any other 'Miller' born in Hailsham that have moved to nearby villages. (when I have got a quite moment)

Incidentally the 'Millar' entry in the 1851, came from St Pancras, London - so no connection with yours

Hi again, its me

Had a look whilst waiting for the Yorkshire Puds to rise:

John Miller, Iron Foundry Labourer, 53 born Hailsham with wife Ann, 52 born Lewes and Isaiah aged 15, Iron Founders Lab and William H Miller, grandson aged 1 all in Lewes, Sussex.

James Miller, Gentlemans Groom, 47, born Hailsham with wife Harriet born in Kent and children James 10, George 7, Charles 4, Ann 1 living in South Common, Chailey, Sussex

Samuel Miller, Partly Disabled, 50, born Hailsham, with wife Eliza, 48, born Arlington and children Ann 12, Mary 6, Richard 10, Thomas 5, in Milton Street, Arlington

Their ages fit in nicely with your Edward - Only by looking at the Baptisms in the Parish Register for Hailsham will we find if they are related and who the parents were / are

Well done Chris you are doing brilliantly!  I can see you like a puzzle.

Yes born in Hailsham put me in a bit of a spin because family 'lore' had it that the Millers had lived in Westham for over 200 yrs(however family lore also has it that they came from Hawick in Scotland - neither of which have been proved yet!)

However, Hailsham makes sense because Edward Miller and family, plus his son Luther through whom I am descended all attended the Zoar Strict Baptist Chapel, Upper Dicker (he was married there also - not confirmed) and is supposed to be buried there although my father couldn't find the stone when he looked there a few yrs ago.  I could never understand why they would go all the way from Westham to Upper Dicker for their services, but this would make sense if he was brought up in this particular church.

If the Lewes records office have the Zoar records I think this must be the next place to look?  I could also try in the WSussex records, although I am not sure how comprehensive their Sussex nonconfirmist registers are  ( I am much nearer Chichester than Lewes).

Anyway its all getting very exciting, and thank you again for all those Millers in Hailsham - more long lost relations maybe?

Hi again

Yes, I love this kind of research

Have possibly found the parents of them all on the 1841 census of Hailsham:

Samuel Miller, Ag Lab, aged 80 and his wife Elizabeth aged 70 in Hailsham, both born in Sussex

As I said before - its now down to the Parish Registers to connect them all together or otherwise.

Exciting aint it

Chris in 1066Land

PS - I will be visiting the East Sussex Record Office before the end of the month
