Airdrie Graveyards

Hi, Can anyone help?
I am trying to find where some ancestors were buried in Airdrie district. I have found out they are not in Old Monkland,St Josephs and Clarkston cemeteries.
George Fleming died 30th september 1865 Palacecraigs
Margaret Fleming died 13th january 1857 Faskine
Thomas Fleming died 18th december 1862 Woodhall
Richard Fleming died  15th april  1864 Woodhall Colliery

Airdrie is in the parish of New Monkland, not Old Monkland. The principal burial ground in New Monkland is at Glenmavis, just outside Airdrie. See http://www.northlan.gov.uk/living+here/births+marriages+and+deaths/deaths/cemeteries.html

There is a ST Josephs, in airdrie

I don't think any of the cemeteries* within New Monkland were opened until the 1880's (I may be wrong of course), but there's New Monkland Churchyard.

I'm under the impression that it was the 1880's before any cemeteries were established, prior to this, burials were in Churchyards - and there's lots of them in and around Airdrie!!

I don't think any of the cemeteries in New Monkland were opened until the 1880s, but there's New Monkland Churchyard.

Which is at Glenmavis, and as far as I can recall the cemetery adjoins the kirkyard.

You're quite right Forafrian.

Usually the main churchyard gates are locked, but access can be gained by turning immediately to the right on entering the cemetery gates.

Pat, don't want to depress you, but were your family reasonably well off?
I ask because mine weren't, and had burials at WellWynd Churchyard, which is Aidrie itself.
Although I know there are some records for those who purchased lairs, there were a lot of unmarked pauper's graves, and many of them are in the throes of being moved.
There is a long detailed thread on this board, with a header '350 graves to be exhumed'.    I'd hyperlink to it, but am not sure how, but if you keep scrolling down the Lanarkshire board you'll see it.
I do hope it doesn't apply to your family, but though it worth mentioning.

When Chapel Street Churchyard was re-developed, I believe many remains were re-interred in New Monklands cemetery (the Ryden Mains part from memory) and there were also some of the stones re-erected there.

As Maggie said, there's also Wellwynd Churchyard and Clarkston Churchyard out towards Plains.
