Vicars / Rectors - Any lists ??
« on: Monday 11 October 04 20:22 BST (UK) »
Calling genealogy gurus !

I've got a couple of individuals who I understand could have been vicars / rectors.  I'd like to check if they were first, with dates and parishes later if possible.

Does anybody know of list of vicars / rectors (especially for Essex) - preferably online - that I could call upon.  I'm very intersted in the period 1600 to 1700 ...... yes, I know it's a tall order !!

Aye

I don't know any any online lists, but it is worthwhile e-mailing the CoE (assuming they were CoE). Search for a church in the area that you're interested in.

I have a church warden ancestor. When I visited the church in which he served, I found that they kept lists of all former church wardens and details of their burial plots.

Regards,

Kris.

Hi
Here is a link to a data base that is in its infancy but is expanding and worth a look once in a while.

Just a quick thanks to all.  It looks like I'm off to the library to find Crockford's (I don't know how far back it goes - but I'll soon find out !).

The site Peter gives will be something else when it's finished - it's looking good for Kent but nowhere else as yet.

I'll keep you posted about my progress.

Thanks again

All ...

Sopme time has gone by since the last exchanges and I've just been re-checking the site mentioned by Peter.  The site is coming on brilliantly and contains data on over 50,000 individuals.  The new address for the search page is:

http://eagle.cch.kcl.ac.uk:8080/cce/index.html

It's just given me a C16 'Fewell' that I'd never come across before - so I'm delighted with it ! A very good site indeed - happy searching !

This time fram is too early for Crockfords, but the cced database has been helpful to me.

Also I found , that if you can find the diocese, the RO which holds the reocrds, may hold copies of ordingationpapers.

I have had luck with this
