Location Of Electoral Role 1912-13 Cwmcarvan Court
« on: Monday 11 October 04 12:10 BST (UK) »
Can some one please asssit me in locating the Electoral Role for Cwmcarvan Court, Cwmcarvan, Trelleck, Mon., for 1912-13. My father Jack Henry Slade Bn 1912 at Cwmcarvan Court. His father George Slade Mother Rose Alice Slade listed on Birth Cert as Butler Domestic. I am trying to find out the name of the house owner. It was sold by Auction in 1910.
I have tried Gwent Records Office, Newport Records, Monmouth Museum and Monmouth Library no one has any idea where these records are.

At first hand I though perhaps these Voters lists would be held in Cardiff Reference Library, it is still worth checking that just incase http://www.cardiff.gov.uk/leisure/libwb2k2/pages/el_cntrl.htm but I am not 100% about that .

Here is the Familia site which you may find of use, going by information from this site: http://www.familia.org.uk/services/wales/monmouthshire.html there do not seem to be any Electoral Roll registers available.

Thank you for your reply, I have tried Cardiff Reference Library but they do not hold the information I require. They have suggested Glamorgan Records Office, I am waiting for a reply. It would appear that the Electoral Role for Cwmcarvan in 1912-23 has been lost.

As far as I am aware the Electoral Rolls for the whole county are held at the Reference Library, John Frost square, Newport. I don't think there were any for the years 1914-1918 because that was WW1 but I am pretty sure they have the rest, because I have used them.

I finally tracked down the records to Library of Wales, in Aberystwyth. But  there is no listing for Cwmcarven Court. was it empty or were they to posh to register. Someone was there in October 1912 as my father was born at this address. we will probably never know.................Unless someone out there knows.

You say that Cwmcarvan Court was sold at Auction in 1910 so you have some information. Can I ask how you know this? because there might be something in the record office about the sale. If the Auctioneers are still in existence and most of the local firms are still going in one form or another, then it might be possible to find out that way. I am surprised that the 1912-13 electoral rolls are not in newport Reference Library, I thought they had them all, so I have learnt something too.

A few years ago I visited the house in question, it is or was owned by a German family. I was very cheeky and knocked on the door. They probably thought I was casing the joint, but I did take my fathers birth certificate. The person who I spoke to was not the owner, but a friend showed me a old catalogue of the auction sale in a pub(did not note its name) Monmouth in 1910. Since then due to the problem of locating records I have written a 3 or 4 letters requesting any futher info, but alas with no reply.

I have been to the reference library in John Frost Square and according to the Electoral Roll for 1911 and 1912 the only person eligible to vote using Cwmcarvan Court as the property is as follows
Surname, forename/s, title if any, address, Qualifying property
MOCK, Stephen Saunders, Colonel, 2Gwydr Crescent Swansea, Share of house and freehold land Cwmcarvan Court Estate.

There was no other mention of Cwmcarvan Court Estate at all so it would seem that whoever had the other share/s in the house was either not eligible because they were female or they had not botheres to register their right to vote in that district. perhaps they had property in other places and just forgot.

Thank you very much for that, this is the reply I got from the library.

Thank you for your enquiry dated 10th November 2004,regarding electoral
registers relating to the parish of Cwmcarvan for the years 1912 to 1913.
I regret, that after searching through the electoral register's for the
above years,
I was unable to trace any reference to a Cwmcarvan Court or a reference
to the
surname Slade.
If we can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Do you have any other suggestions as to where I go from here.

Again thank you very much
