Re: Sheehan records of Dungarvan, Waterford
« Reply #9 on: Monday 24 April 06 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hello Jen,
No not all records were destroyed. Some that were sent to Dublin - to the four Courts, from around the country were during the war of Independence.  A long story but to cut it short, some were used to barricade the windows and some were sent  down to the basements.

Some parish's did not send their original records but chose to keep them in the parish.  As it turned out they did the right thing. The Dungarvan ones are in the process of being computerised now, so it is easier to get copies.

The address's are as follows
The Dungarvan Leader is:-
dungarvanleader [at] cablesurf.com
Address:-
The Dungarvan Leader
O'Connell Street
Dungarvan.
Co. Waterford.
Eire

The Dungarvan Observer is:-
news [at] dungarvanobserver.com
Address:-
The Dungarvan Observer
Shandon
Dungarvan
Co.Waterford.
Eire

You are right, there are still Sheehan's in town and if you are a follower of U2  - their road manager is one.

Do you  know any other names attached to them ?

Hi Cáit

Thanks for the addresses.  I'll let you know how I get on.

Do you know who is computerising the Dungarvan records?  Are they going to be available on-line?  So many questions I'm sorry!!!

Unfortunately I don't know any of Daniel's siblings names (or even if there were any).  All I have is his army records when he joined the Indian Army at Cork in 1852 and he stated his father as his next of kin - Michael Sheehan, Dungarvan, Waterford.  I suppose at least I know that Michael was alive in 1852!!!  All the other information that I have is from him downwards.

Kind regards
English Jen.

Dear Chritopher,

No it is not FAS that is computerising the records. It is being done in house.

Computerised Records

Hi Jen,
If you need any more help let me know I will be looking for your letter in the paper.

As for the records they are being done in house and as far as I am know they are not online – sorry - and Jen  don’t ever worry about asking questions.  My father always told me that you get no-where without asking questions and there is only one day that you will ever stop learning.

You say that Daniel joined the Indian Army.  Funny that as my friend’s gggrandfather was also in the Indian Army and we can’t find any records on him.  Can you tell me where you found his records?  He joined in 1854. I know that his wife died and was buried there. Their only daughter was born there.

You are a bit like me I am trying to find my grandfather - my dad’s dad, who was in New York when he was killed there (mugged) He was working for a merchant from here. They were trading worldwide.  I know his date of birth and death and that he was hospitalised there in Yonkers but can not find where he is buried or anything else……….. Brickwalls - any one got a sledgehammer?

Hiya Cáit,

Would your grand dad have been buried in America or would the body have been flown back to Ireland
so that he could be buried at home ??? Even if you do not know would you have any thoughts on that point.
Cáit this is Rootschat. There's no need for sledgehammers. Have you posted details of your grand dad on the boards ??? Post some details Cáit .. the digging crew are waiting to assist you in your research :D

   Christopher
The death was 23-December either 1932 or 1923 and no the body was not sent back here. My father was unaware of his father whereabouts until he got the hospital bill courteous of his uncles in NY. It was a hospital in Yonkers NY but do not ask me which one as my father died in 1976 and I can not  find the invoice. My father’s mothers at that time had left him with her sister to bring him up and his father was unaware of the situation.

Hiya Cáit,

At least you have the 23rd December either/or date of death. That is a starting point. May I read that last sentence again please ??? Do you mean an aunt of your father reared your father ??? Now if that bit is correct may I try the next bit Your father's father was unaware his sister in law was raising your father.
Have I got it correct ???

Many thanks, Chris

Hi Cáit

Sorry, I've mislead you there.  I have his army records with the British Army that I got from Kew.  On the British Army papers it stated that he was in the Indian Army.  I was unable to find any records of his service with them.

Kind regards
English Jen.
