Sadly for FreeReg (working with the old parish registers) you would need to own or have access to a microfiche reader, as well as the PC.
Micro fiche readers are pretty obsolete these days and can be got quit cheap on places like ebay. I don't know if you have a freecycle or free ads in Canada but may be someone would even donate one to a good cause. Mine was kindly given to me on longterm load from the Highland Library here in Scotland. It really is worth advertising if you are keen as places like garages used to use them but don't so much these days so I am sure there are plenty in the back of offices somewhere.

FreeCen (working with census) is different, all you need it a PC for that as the pages from the census are on disk.

Although I am county coordinator for FreeReg I also am a volunteer for FreeCEN, as I like to change about, and both help with my own research. What a thrill it is when you find an ancestor  ;D Let me know what you think and drop me and email if you want to know more.
I am the ROC county co-ordinator for FreeReg, and always on the look out for more volunteers.
