I'm questioning this too .....   ::)

"Hantsfordshire" - it should be Hampshire ....... !

I keep wanting to say it's Salisbury Plain .... but that's the wrong county ....  :P

Hi Annie,

I don't have a scanner but I think I've figured out the confusion. It was me! He wrote Winchester, Hants and in my overtired state I turned it into an unknown county! Good grief!  Well, at least that mini mystery solved!

As to the family, yes, the 19th century is filled in pretty well. His parents, Fenton and Mary Ann Moore were in Kensington in 1901 and finally settled in Milton, Southsea, where Fenton died in 1916 and Mary Ann in 1939.  I have accounted for most siblings, he's the big mystery!

Brenda

P.S. Didn't figure such a close shot would offer many clues, but here's the other one I have for him in uniform. Looks like a nice chap I think  ;)

Do you know in which grave yard Fenton & Ann were laid to rest?

Hey Wendi,

Alexander Moore's father Fenton is buried at Highland Road Cemetery in Hampshire, Plot J, Row 28, Grave 31. Mary Ann Moore his wife isn't buried next to him.

Thanks!

Hi Brenda

A long time since you originally posted this but only just discovered it.

Might I ask whether you were successful in tracking down the information you were after?

Just for the record, "Pitt Corner" was one of a string of British Army camps encircling the City of Winchester. The actual camp was mainly located in what is now "Oliver's Battery", indeed many of the roads in Oliver's Battery are actually the old army camp roads, and some of the first houses were converted army huts!

I had some trouble identifying a 217 Company Royal Engineers and tying it down to a Division who assembled near Winchester. Have you had any luck?

I am researching the army camps around Winchester, especially those on the Hursley Park estate (which includes Pitt) and I'd be very interested in any information you might have or wheter you would be prepared to share the images etc, with me for my research.

If you have any questions relating to Pitt Camp, please do feel free to ask and I'll do what I can to help.

Yours sincerely
Dave
