Royal Navy
« on: Sunday 02 April 06 14:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,
i wonder if anyone can help. Is there a website where i can find out where Royal Navy ships went? My great, great grandfher was in the navy and i would like to know where he went on the ships he sailed.
I'm waiting for his record to arrive at the moment, but i do know that he was serving on the Tourmaline when the 81 census was taken.

Thanks
MArie

Hi Marie,

I guess you already have the description and photos of HMS Tourmaline
from:
http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/emerald_class.htm

As for the schedule, following is composed from The Times 1880-1883.
The period you are interested in 1881 - it is a world-wide cruise of
HMS Tourmaline as a part of Flying (Detached Squadron).

September 27, 1879 - Hochelaga, Montreal
http://www4.bnquebec.ca/massic/mt3685.htm

January 21, 1880 - from Barbados to Jamaica
February 4, from Barbados to Trinidad and Tobago
February 19 - Trinidad
February - cruising round West Indies
May 21, 1880 - Colon
June 1880 - Jamaica
September 1880 - it is decided at the House of Commons to form a squadron
of training ships (as there are many young seamen who should be
sent to sea, but there are no training ships available and it will
take a long time to build new training ships). The squadron will
consist of Inconstant, Bacchante, Tourmaline and Cleopatra. For this
reason, Touramline is withdrawn from the West Indies squadron.
September 24, 1880 - Sheerness, repairs at dock No. 3
October 1880 - The Flying Squadron (Inconstant, Cleopatra, Carysfort, Bacchante,
Tourmaline) sailed for a training cruise round the world, which is
supposed to finish not earlier than in May 1882. During this cruise
vessels will spend around 370 days at sea.
The crew of the Flying Squadron was 1900 men. The schedule of the
voyage was prepared by Admiralty, stating arrivals and departures from
the ports, but it was (at least in October 1880 kept secret from the
Press).
October 22, 1880 at 12-40 Tourmaline left Sheerness for a wrold-wide
cruise.
November 01, 1880 - Tormaline left Plymouth for Madeira
November 05, 1880 - arrived Madeira from Gibraltar

arrival, the telegram about the beginning of Boers war was received,
and also orders to proceed to Cape of Good Hope

Hi Marfric,
My Great Great Grandfather was also on Tourmaline in 1881 census. Did you find out any other information. One of the First Mates killed himself, as the engines in the ship were inferior, having had a contract for the cheapest price accepted. seems an unfortunate ship to be on.
Cheers,
John
