Samuel Rutherford Crockett
« on: Saturday 01 April 06 16:57 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
Another mystery man.

I am trying to find the family of Samuel Rutherford Crockett (spelt in various ways), who was born in 1859 near New Galloway Kirkcudbright.  He was a free church minister at Penicuik until he resigned in 1895 when he wrote a volume of sketches entitled The Stickit Minister, and went on to devote himself to literature.

Any information on him and his parents and or siblings would be greatly received.

Any census information would also be extremely welcome.

Many thanks for any help.

Kind regards
Su

Hi Su,

    There's a website:-

     www.slainte.org.uk/scotauth/crockdsw.htm

which gives some information.  Apparently he was the illegitimate son of Anne Crocket (sic) a dairy maid.  He married the daughter of a philanthropic Manchester mill-owner.  Sorry not to be able to help further.

Isles.

Hi Isles

Thank you so much for the site...it's marvellous, and tells me such a lot about Samuel R Crockett.

We will have to get the biography now, to learn more about him.

Thank you once again for all your help.

Kind regards

Topic's a long time dead, but had to notify that S R Crockett, a Minister of the South Kirk in Penicuik, was a personal friend of the author Robert Louis Stevenson and somewhere I have read some of the correspondence between the two of them.
