1901 Census - Hampshire
« on: Friday 31 March 06 22:20 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Looking for further information concerning Thomas McAlister b.c. 1875 Ireland living in Hampshire in 1901 census.  Thomas married Harriett Bailey in 1900 Portsea Island, so believe this is the same man.  Oral family story has it he was a tailor by trade.  Also interested in house and street number he is living at, and if he is boarding with and who.  Many thanks to all for your time and help.

Thank you Bearkat,

Well it still might be the same fellow I am in quest of, as oral family story had it he made navy badges.  So it is very interesting to see he is actually in the RA!  :)

Thank you for time, it is greatly appreciated.

Adeline,

I suspect that you found the possible marriage on FreeBMD - please remember it is NOT complete.  The Harriet Bailey you found is the only possible spouse given, but on each page of the index there are at least FOUR marriages, so there are at least three other possible couples missing.

Since I cannot find a Harriet McAlister in the 1901 census index anywhere, I suspect you may be looking at the wrong bride.  :(

Greetings Little Nell,

Yes you had suspected right.  :)  I am looking at the BMD, and I checked again, but I am only recieving one hit to a Harriett Mary Bailey in the April May June Quarter and both are listed on the same page.  Since you are getting four hits, is there a Harriett Weaver?

Thomas married a Harriet, but I thought her surname would of been Weaver.  The oral family story has it, Thomas once lived in Hampshire, but by 1902 Thomas MacAllister moved to Lambeth, London and started up his own dry cleaning/laundry buisness.  Later in the 1920's, living with this household was an elderly woman whom they always called, Granny Weaver.  So I always assumed she was Harriett's mother.

In the 1891 census for Hampshire there is another Thomas McAlister b.c. 1867 Ireland, is he living with a Robert Kemp?  This would be eight years of age difference for Thomas by the 1901 census, but sometimes ages are mistakes in census records.

Many thanks for your advice, its greatly appreciated at my end.

Hi Adeline,

No, I don't get four hits -  only the one you found. The FreeBMD index is great because it links to other people with the same reference, but it doesn't actually indicate which partner belongs to whom.

As I say, I looked for Harriet McAlister on the 1901 census - and she isn't there.  I've just checked the BMD indexes (beta version, available to search free at present at:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk - sign up as a guest.

No Harriet Weaver in the same quarter with the same reference as Thomas McAlister.  So perhaps your Thomas McAlister married some other time, but after the 1901 census  :-\

The Thomas McAlister in the 1891 census is a soldier (gunner Royal Marine Artillery)  living in Eastney barracks.

Hi Nell,

Yes, I re-checked the 1901 census and could not find a Harriett MacAllister as well, so it appears you might be correct.  Perhaps they married in Ireland and immigrated together to England, as that is still a possiblity.

Another possiblility, as you mentioned earlier, it might be a later marriage and I'll have to re-check again.   But as far as I remember I didn't find any Harriett Weaver's married to a MacAllister, which would therefore bring this marriage back to Ireland.  But I will take your advice and be leary of this one............however Thomas (above) I will keep notes on him for comparison in further research.

Thanks Nell, you've been great!  :)  Love to hear others opinions, as it means alot to me.  And I will continue the hunt!  :)

Hi there Adeline:

Thomas McAlister was tailor from Ireland and did indeed marry Harriet.

Harriets mother was Granny Weaver. Harriet also has a sister known as  "Pussy" who married a Helbrough.

Granny Weaver had been married previously.

Thomas and Harriet McAlister had 8 children (7 of their own, plus they adopted a girl named Lillian.)

One of Thomas & Harriets children was my Grandmother; Ellen Mary (Ginger)

I have a plethora of information about this side of our family, so I do hope you return to this site after a 2 year hiatus.

Kind regards
Darren
