1841 Census lookup request Shoreditch Middx
« on: Friday 31 March 06 10:34 BST (UK) »
Could somebody please lookup 3, Wellington Street, Kingsland Road for me on the 1841 census.  The address is taken from an 1839 birth certificate which gives the registration district as St Leonards Shoreditch Middx.  The head of household hopefully is John Lay, but either way I would like to know who lived there.
Lay, Wright , Carter, Hunt, Clerkenwell, Newsouthgate Wall, Cann Hammersmith, Holborn or in London and Greater London ie Middlesex, Surrey.  Any connection to Lay families who originated from the Hoxton - Tower Hamlets, Shoreditch area would be greatly received.

Thankyou for your time.  The full details of the Lay family were John Lay (Head), Ann Lay (Wife) and sons John aged 7, Thomas aged 4.  On the 1851 census they say that Ann and the boys were born in St Lukes Middx, but they appear to have been registerd in St Leonards.  John senior was born in Feltham.  There adress in 1851 was 5 Red Lion Passage which was more in Holborn than Shoreditch.

Thanks so much.  That is great.  I have been trying for ages to confirm that John and Ann were definitely the parents of my great grandfather Thomas James Lay, (hence oldtommy) evidently a once famous London gambler and bookmaker'.  He does not appear with the family on the 1851 census but leaves a suspicious slot between his brothers John and William.  I found a Thos Jas Lay in Shoreditch working away as a 'Pot boy' that seemed to fit the bill.  You have helped solve the mysteries and reunited once and for all young Tommy and his family.

Thanks once again

oldtommy
