William Robinson & Aunt Betsy
« on: Wednesday 29 March 06 17:55 BST (UK) »
I am hoping that somebody out there will have some information about William Robinson  who married Betsy Snowdon in Auckland   Co. Durham in 1907.
If I am right, this is the William Robinson who was living in the house at the head of the St Helens coal pit around the 1920s/1930
My Mum and her parents, her father was Betsy's brother..Robert Snowdon..lived there with them when mum was young, she remembers playing with one of her cousins around the pit head area and going back to the house covered in black
Betsy was her favourite aunt and it would be nice if anyone could give me any information as to what became of her and her family.  I know that the pit was open until 1966 and it might just be that someone can remember or know something about it.

Hope so

Hiya Lindy,

Here is some information about St Helen's Colliery http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/s042.htm
The site includes a list of the names of miners who were killed in the colliery in pit disasters.
I am sorry I am unable to provide any information about Betsy and her family.
Lets hope the pictures in this site help to jog someone's memory.

Hi Chris,

Yes I have seen this site, and indeed it did bring back memories for my mother, she remembered the place well.
It seems so sad to me that she let her contacts with her aunt and family go, although it was hardly her fault, her parents decided that there were better opportunities for her in the south and away they went.
Many thanks for taking an interest, and if you should ever find 'Aunt Betsy' or family in your travels then I would be so grateful if you would let me know.

Cheers

Hello there Warder 62

No, sad to say, although I have found out quite a lot about the Snowdon family in general, My Great Aunt Betsy is still something of an enigma-
I keep on hoping though.

Thanks for asking
