Hi there alord

It is the East Sussex Record Office that you want in Lewes.

I will be going there before the end of the month - am quite willing to look up 'specific enquiries' as against blanket research.

Is there anything else that I can help you with

Hello Chris,

It would very helpful if you could look up the following family for me in the 1841 census for Hastings (either All Saints or St Clements).  In 1851 the father (with a different wife) was living in Bourne Street.

James Tassell (b 1811)
Margaret Tassell (wife, birth unknown)
Margaret Maria Tassell (b 1836)
Mary Ann Tassell (b 1838)
Maria Tassell (b 1840)

Any (if you have time!) this family (maybe too young to have own home?):
John Carey (b. 1819)
Francis Carey (b. 1823, I think)
Samuel George Carey (b 2nd Qtr 1841)
Both born in Hastings (her maiden name is Sherwood).  I understand that the 1841 census was 6/7 June, so the child may be on the census, or may not.  Don't yet know where in Hastings he was born, so if this is too wide search don't bother.  If you have the 1851 census for Hastings and can find them, that would be helpful too.

Thanks very much,

James

Hi James

1841 Census – Bourne Street, Hastings Old Town (All Saints)
TASSELL Margaret, 25, born Sussex
              Margaret, 5, born Sussex
              Mary, 2yrs 6months, born Sussex
              Maria, 70, born Sussex

There is no sign of James anywhere in the 1841 census – but there are several Tassell / Tassel families, the head of each is a Fisherman, so possibly James is at sea on the night of the census.

1841 Census – Castle Terrace, St Mary in the Castle, Hastings.
CAREY John, 30, Cordwainer, Not born in Sussex
           Frances, 25, born Sussex
           John, 3, born Sussex
Female Not Named, 1 week, born Sussex
SHERWOOD, Sarah, 17, Servant, born Sussex.

Sorry, census says that baby is a girl – but they could have got it wrong.

HO 107/ 1635/ Folio 179/ Page 123 - 5 East Hill Passage, Hastings.
CAREY Francis, Head, Widow, 34, Shoebinder, born Hastings
Samuel, Son, Unm, 9, Scholar, Hastings
Elizabeth, Dau, Unm, 8, Scholar, Hastings
Sarah, Dau, Unm, 4, Scholar, Hastings

As you can see from the above, they did get it wrong, she was called Samuel.

Hope the above is to your liking

Thank you very much Chris (a very quick response!).  That improves our picture of the family greatly and confirms our theory that James Tassell married twice.  I suspect the 70 year old Maria may be 7m (month) old Maria, but it could be his mother.

We have another branch of the family living in Hastings in 1841/51, please could look these up too when you have time  :)

William Upton
Susannah Upton (daugther, born 1845 Hastings)

Susannah lived Pleasant Row/East Beach Street (1871/1881) once married.
William was a Land Pilot in 1866 (Susannah's marriage cert).  I think that means he met ships and guided them into port or up a river (just called a pilot now).

This family is a bit more sketchy (e.g. we don't know the mother's name yet).

Thanks again for your help,

James
