Here is the 1841 entry - dont forget ages were rounded down to the nearest 5, so John and Caroline could be 21, 22, 23 or 24.

Same family in 1851, but John has changed his birthplace, and Caroline obviously lied about her age in 1841, but at least little Henry is still living.

Many thanks for your quick response Chris I am really grateful.
I initially thought there might be a Gander connection but the spelling was incorrect. (I have since learnt not to take too much notice as all my surnames appear in various guises!) I am not totally convinced with my Gander theory hence further searching but I have been hitting brick walls.  Could you tell me which would be the best  library in East Sussex to access the censuses you suggest and I will try and make a day trip over.

Hi Lelapsley

The most obvious place is the East Sussex Record Office at The Maltings, Lewes where you will find all the Sussex Census on Film.

Also there are all the church registers, but most important of all there are books of Parish Register transcriptions freely available on the shelves in the searchroom.
This means you can check the various churches of Ashburnham, Wartling, Warbleton, etc, etc and follow their baptisms and marriages - possibly deaths as well.

I will still keep looking though - you never know, we may crack it together.

 Hello Chris -

Would you please take a look at FRANT and see if there is an Edward Sales with a wife either Hannah or Emily.  Ages i'm not sure about but by calcualtion 55 upwards.

I'm not sure if the ladies are one and the same or i'm looking at two Edwards with different wives.
