Hi James

There was a couple of odd 'Uptons' in Hastings, but no more complete families

Hi Norman

In reply to your private message:

Would appreciate your assistance in finding any information on the Cake family from Sussex.  My grandfather was Frank Cake born St Mary in the Castle on 19th January 1889. His father was William Cake, a waiter but that is about as much information as I have.

RG12/ 761/ Folio 114/ Page 35 - 64 Plymmleman Road, Hastings (St Mary in-the-Castle)

Will look on the other census soon as I have finished my Lunch.

Norman

Here is the full page scan of the 1891 census

Name, Age in 1891, Birthplace, Relationship to head-of-house, Civil parish, County.
Cake, Agnes, 27, born London, Wife, St Mary in the Castle, Sussex
Cake, Beatrice E, 4, Hastings, Sussex, Daughter, St Mary in the Castle, Sussex
Cake, Frank, 2, Hastings, Sussex, Son, St Mary in the Castle, Sussex
Cake, Fredk C, 18days, Hastings, Sussex, Son, St Mary in the Castle, Sussex
Cake, William G, 28, Wembourne, Dorset, Head, St Mary in the Castle, Sussex
Cake, William G, 6, Portsmouth, Son, St Mary in the Castle, Sussex.

As William Senior was born in Dorset, and the oldest child was born in Portsmouth - it is highly likely they married in that part of the country in about 1885

Checked the 1891 Sussex census . for your Cake Family - they are not there. (very few counties have been transcribed to date)

So went into the 1901 through the PRO (all counties transcribed - but it is a pay site - but only used the index part) to look for them - with limited results:

Found some of them in Portsmouth

William Cake, 39, born Wimboune, Dorset, Waiter.
William Cake, 16, born Wimborne, Dorset, Brewery Lad
Frank Cake, 12, Scholar, born Hastings, Sussex.

No sign of Agnes, Beatrice or young Fred.

My sincere thanks for such a comprehensive response in such a short time.  I had found a lot of Cake families in the Dorset area between the 1790's and 1880's  but was unable to make any real connection. You have provided me with some good clues to chase. Thank you.

Hi Chris

Hope you can help, I am looking for James Honeysett born c1830 in Ashburnham. The only information I can find is in the 1881 Census.
He is shown as living in Herstmonceux with wife Mary born Warbleton c1826 and his five sons born in Hooe, Ninfield and Herstmonceux.

Many thanks

Lel

Hi Lel

Found your 1881 census entry

Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Age, Birthplace, Occupation, Disability
James HONEYSETT, Head, M, Male, 51, Ashburnham, Sussex, England,     Carrier
Mary HONEYSETT, Wife, M, Female, 55, Warbleton, Sussex, England, Carriers Wife
George HONEYSETT, Son, U, Male, 23, Hooe, Sussex, England, Groom (D)
Henry HONEYSETT, Son, U, Male, 18, Hooe, Sussex, England, Painter
William HONEYSETT, Son, Male, 15, Ninfield, Sussex, England, Ag Lab
Edward HONEYSETT, Son, Male, 13, Herstmonceux, Sussex, England, Scholar
John HONEYSETT, Son, Male, 9, Herstmonceux, Sussex, England, Scholar
Source Information:
    Dwelling     Gardner Street
    Census Place   Herstmonceaux, Sussex, England
    Family History Library Film     1341247
    Public Records Office Reference     RG11
    Piece / Folio     1042 / 24
    Page Number     6

Now come the problems.

Honeysett is quite a popular name in this part of Sussex and there are many variations of it:
Hunnisett, Hunset, Honeyset, Honeysett, Honneysett, Honnisett, Honesett, Honnesett, etc, etc.

If James was born 1830 (from age in 1881 Census) then would expect him to be 10 / 11 in 1841 depending on which side of the census he was born.

In the 1841 census there is a 11 year old James at Wartling, son of Robert & Mary and in the IGI, there is the following:

78. JAMES HUNNISETT - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 16 AUG 1851 Wartling, Sussex, England
Married Mary Gander aged 24 – Father was William Gander; Groom was 22 - Father was Robert Hunnisett. (2 years difference in ages at marriage)

Your James and Mary have 4 years difference, although she is older than him as in the marriage above.

As yet, I have not been able to locate a Mary Gander in the 1841 with a father named William.

Have looked in the 1851 census, but not as yet managed to match up with your details.  What we really need is the 1871, 1861, etc - then follow them backwards; but dont have access to them at home.

Not as yet been able to tie up the Ashburnham or Warbleton as shown in 1881 census - but all the places mentioned are with 5 - 10 miles of each other.

Will keep looking though

Hi Chris,
Some time ago I asked you for a look up for a Paffett family in Hastings. There was a family there, but not the one I was looking for.
Do you think you could possibly give me the info on that family, as I am finding that all the Paffetts around the country seem to be "mine", and I`m trying to work out where they originated. ???
Many thanks,
Bex  ;D
