There have been comments made about children born outside of marriage and unable to search further .  Rootschatters may already be aware of the following. I was on National Archive searching for my GGGrandfather Woodroofe Excise Officer and on the ensuing lists were many "Orders of Filliation and Maintenance of bastard children" .  On these the Mother's name was listed and the name of the man that had fathered the children.
Howlett, Brown, Woodroofe, Mills, Battey, Woods

I'd like to add my great-grandfathers too.

Thomas Edward COLE, born 1826 in Kington Magna, Dorset.  He was a farmer.

Thomas Isaac HEDGES, born 1852 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. He was in the 76th Regiment of Foot and then a labourer.

Thomas Shaw MULLINER, born 1833 in Northampton.  He was a tutor, lay preacher and 'gentleman'.

John Griffith JONES.  No details at all on this chap.  I have not dared to try to search for Jones yet.

I did not know any of these ancestors, though I would dearly  have loved to.

Were nearly all little boys called Thomas in the 19th century??

Cheers,
Dot.
