I'm fortunate to have photos of all my great-grandparents. :)  Only two survived long enough to be alive when my parents were born even, but at least one photo survived of each. :)  My great-grandmother were:

- Lavinia Jane Wales - born 1883 in Ramsgate, died 1952 in the loony-bin.  She married Edward James Golding.
- Grace Harriet Kennard - born 1880 in Milstead, died 1964 in Hollingbourne.  She married Alfred John Twyman.
- Rose Hannah Challinor - born 1883 in Stoke-on-Trent, died 1932 in the cinema.  She married George Berks.
- Beatrice Louise Glover - born 1893 in London, died 1974 in Maidstone.  She married Gomer Wakely.
Currently engaging in a one-name study of the Twyman surname.

Golding, Twyman, Kennard, Wales (Kent).
Berks, Challinor (Staffordshire).
Wakely. (Glam & Monmouth).

Would Thomas Kennard of Milstead be the grandfather of Grace.

I do not like your expression 'Looney-bin'. You may not have known her but she does deserve some respect.

Not sure...her father was base-born, so I've not a clue who her grandfather was.  However, I do have a number of Thomas Kennards of Milstead in the tree...which one exactly is he?

Any chance that Rose had CHALLINOR  kin folk in the Wrexham region pf North Wales.
Not that I'm aware of.

You may not have known her but she does deserve some respect.
Well sorry then. :(  However, my use of a coloquialism that has been in common use for years does not equate to disrespect on my part.

I only have pictures of 2 of my great grandmothers, Alice Mary Pattemore b.1889 d.1964 and Gertrude Mary Markham Clark b.1898 d.1975. My grandparents have pictures of my other 2 grt-grandmothers somewhere but I have not seen them.

I can see a lot of resemblance between my mum and her grandmother Alice and we both have her eyes, but I cannot see any resemblance between my dad and his grandmother Gertrude.

Alice is aged about 60 in the picture and had a goitre and Gertrude is also about 60.

Marie - thanks for asking. In fact, it was my Nan (Hildegard's daughter) who came to Britain after WW2 and then married my Grandfather who is from London.

My four great grandmothers:
Lily Winifred Greene - St Pancras London 1886
Georgina Waters - Hounslow, Middlesex 1876
Minnie Edwards - London 1874
Bessie Catherine Morris - Monmouthshire 1889

Out of the four my family could only help me with Georgina's first name.  They didn't know who their grandparents were (other than they were grandma and grandad of course), so they took some tracking down.  Georgina didn't help by eloping and lying on her marriage certificate (her spouse lied too) if it wasn't for a perceptive rootschatter, I might still be looking.

Looking at the four, I have quite London base; but I have 7 out of the eight great great grandmas too, and they add Hampshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Berkshire, Kent, Herefordshire into the mix.

the later years - aging great grandmothers

To-date, we have an interesting list of names from different time periods and places.

It would be interesting to determine how many years
did they live as a widow or did they remarry.
