The Tottenham Coachman
« Reply #99 on: Sunday 09 April 06 21:34 BST (UK) »

Alice Mary Peverill 1870-1951
Alice was a 'formidable and scary woman' according to my mum.
My mum only met her once, but remembers that Alice gave her a cardigan with yellow ducks on.

Stepping back in time, I wonder if Alice ever visited the
"India Rubber Factory".  Or did she ever hop aboard a coach on Chestnut Road in Tottenham with Frederick in
the lead??

I guess when I was young in parts of Holloway, I also missed the "Indian Rubber Factory".  In the name of progress,
the old factory moved to Essex.

But looking back to the days when Alice was young,  she
likely knew many of the children of the workers of
the "Indian Rubber Factory".

And, I wonder if Emily Potter from Somerset, during
her days has a Tottenham teacher every taught
one and one to the children of Chestnut Road
such as Albert Squires, Martha Harris, and the
Abbott, Peverill and Swan kids?   :D

Know all my great-grandparents. :)
- Edward James Golding & Lavinia Jane Wales
- Alfred John Twyman & Grace Harriett Kennard
- George Berks & Rose Hannah Challinor
- Gomer Wakely & Beatrice Louisa Glover
All but Beatrice were born in the 1880s, with her being born in the 1890s. :P
I never knew any of them...and coincidentally, both my parents only knew one of their grand-parents (in both cases, only their maternal grand-mothers were alive when my parents were born).
Currently engaging in a one-name study of the Twyman surname.

Golding, Twyman, Kennard, Wales (Kent).
Berks, Challinor (Staffordshire).
Wakely. (Glam & Monmouth).

Plumstead Moments & Thoughts - Let's Think.

What an interesting thread this is!

Eveline Esther Carpenter (1871-1955), second of nine children, went into service at the age of 12.
someone else has said earlier on this thread - I do think of them when my own life seems hard - they had to cope with so much!

Veron

Looking back through the years, what an interesting slice
of England is situated between Royal Arsenal & Shooter's Hill.

Think of the importance of the start of
"Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society" in 1868.

Think about the Royal Arsenal workers from
Bloomfield Road, then look at 1893 & the formation of
the "Woolwich Reds" and now Arsenal F C.

THINK back between those important years
1868 to 1893, then a picture may flash forward
about the life and times of the Carpenter family.

And think about Harriet Wood beyond her days with the Carpenter folks.

I've been fortunate to have been able to trace all 4 of my great-grandmothers.

Three of them were children of the Colonies (Cape and Australia) - their *foremothers* of either English or Irish/English descent.

Mary DAVENPORT - born Queensland, Australia
Edith EDMONDS - born NSW, Australia
Dorothy BARNES - born Cape Colony, South Africa
Margaret THORBURN - born Scotland

I unfortunately only knew my Scottish great-grandmother and have such fond memories of her.   Tracing the journeys and stories of the other women has been such a fulfilling thing to do ... not to mention terribly addictive!!

There sure are  :)

To make matters even more interesting .... I'm living in the Netherlands now ... and my children have a Dutch father and Polish grand father!
Nothing like fruit-salad ancestory to keep things fun!!   :D  well fun from my-hooked-on-genealogy point of view anyway :)
