I love my great grandmothers, not that I knew them all...only the one and she was quite strict and I was quite in awe of her, but she bought me the best Christmas present ever ;D.

She was Mabel Smart, then there was Ada Bright, Ellen Jenkins and last but certainly not least Elizabeth Williams.  She was my mother's mother's mother and so especially special  ??? :-\, girly line and all that...oh and she was the one who had 21 children and lived to her nineties, whilst hubby got worn out long before, so you got admire the girl ;D

AMES, William & Rose

Emily Mary AMES b Bedfordshire1873 & d 1960 [m Harry WORKER]
cathy

Looking back, there were William & Rose AMES
and Harry & Caroline AMES.

Rose worked with straw hats while some of her neighbours
worked in the lace making trade including the widow
Sarah Valentine.  Others included Ann & Ellen VINE,
Sarah GOODMAN & Mrs. Ann BELLAMY.

I have an aunt with married name of AMES, but she was born a WOODS in London or Essex.

Thanks, Zelley,

Harry & Caroline AMES left Bedfordshire and went to Hornsey as per 1901 - a lot of the AMES did go to London it seems?

Harry AMES [b 1854] was a VALENTINE on his mother's side...I do not know who William AMES married  :-[

But a 'Rose' would make sense [as my gt grandmother, Emily Mary AMES, called her only daughter Rose WORKER etc].

All the women seemed to be in lace making - which was quite vital to family income as mens' work wasn't always regular so the extra 'tied you over' ...less so straw hats  [that is more South Bedfordshire I understand?]

Have another look on tribalpages to see if your info ties in though I havent done a great deal with it lately just bits & pieces

But Cathy that's his happy face! ;D

I probably misled you about Great Gran Webb ne Williams, she did have 21 pregnancies, but only 11 survived to adulthood :'(.  It's impossible to imagine how she coped with it!

What an interesting thread this is!

My four are:

Eliza Tait Wilson (1856-1927), born in Edinburgh, apparently had some sort of medical training very early on - married a presbyterian minister, they later emigrated to Alberta, Canada and he left her in charge of the ranch while he and two sons returned to fight in WW1

Clara Jane Tancock (1861-1942), born in Devon but married an itinerant preacher and travelled to Australia with him on a missionary journey - when they returned she worked in the family draper's business to support his ministry and also managed to raise five children

Louisa Clements (1866-1931), only daughter of a teenage runaway marriage, orphaned at 2 when her dad died of smallpox  :'( mum then remarried and Louisa was brought up by grandparents, working in the family laundry from the age of 12. She went on to have at least 8 children

Eveline Esther Carpenter (1871-1955), second of nine children, went into service at the age of 12. She had two children, one baby very premature whose life she saved by wrapping him in cotton wool and feeding him drops of milk with a fountain pen filler - only to see him killed in action in WW1  :'( She survived both of them and is the only one I remember, though I have photos of all of them.

As someone else has said earlier on this thread - I do think of them when my own life seems hard - they had to cope with so much!

My Great Grandmothers so far are:

Eliza Loader 1859-1934
Emily Holbrook 1873-1958
Alice Mary Peverill 1870-1951

Alice was a 'formidable and scary woman' according to my mum.

Not surprising really, as I have learnt that 2 of her children died before they were 3 and her husband and eldest son died within months of each other, and she always wore black.

My mum only met her once, but remembers that Alice gave her a cardigan with yellow ducks on.
