Elizabeth Baker of Hope Street
« Reply #54 on: Friday 31 March 06 03:55 BST (UK) »
ELIZABETH BAKER  was but one of four and between 1861
and 1881, she can be located on Hope Street in Weymouth.
Some of the nearby streets were CoveRow & Hope  Quay,

Be it 1861 or1891, over the years some of the old familiar
namesare located their.  Some of these would be connected
to Elizabeth and/or her children.

There were folks like the Master  Mariner William FLISHER.
and the pilot boatmen such as William Grant & William Tizard.
Down at the Hope Quay the PEARCE family resided
and Willim Lovell ZELLEY plus his Royal Navy sons
William & Robert.

places, with various occupations

Echoes from Mill Street

It's such a shame that Elizabeth died so young.  Stepping back in time we may   hear   the echoes of the whispering of the old widow
Mary Pearson, the clay worker of Mill Street somewhere in a
small town in Co Durham.  Maybe it would have been after a day
of hard work moulding clay at the glass works. Would she be   chatting with the widow Elizabeth Miller while the
Jefferson, Wood and Adams children played hop scotch on the street as young William Surtees was heading home  after
a day of sweeping a  chimney or two.

One never knows but the children of the 1870's and 1880's
are long gone, but the great grandchildren can step back in time
and think about the life and times of the Mill Street folks,
the work of Mr Jefferson in the meat trade.  Or, the next time
you mold some clay at the local community centre  art fair
think  of old Mary PEARSON  and the great granparents
when they were young and Mill streets future along with
the Scottish & Irish folks as they danced and sang.
Then think of the song  "The Last Rose" in memory of a great grandmother that died  so young but her legacy remains
in the hearts and minds of a dear great grandchild of  today.

And what a great and glorious chance you took,
to list the four great grandmothers.  Be it the Chelsea
beat or song from Wales,  four great grandmothers
are recognized as a group, likely perfect  strangers, but each one shares a piece of a dear great grandchild of today.

Hi Zelley,

I know that a lot of folks tend to concentrate just on the male line, (same surname, etc) but I've always tried to make a point of looking at the female lines too.

And I agree totally with what you're saying!!

Best Wishes, Romilly.

My 4 great grandmothers

One unknown (my father was illegitimate)
Mary Ellen Richardson 1889-1979 - have one photo with her holding me as a baby
Alice Evelyn Broughton 1905-1988 - never knew her (only found my grandad last year, alive in America!)
Sophia Elizabeth Clark 1895-1957 - died of cancer way before i was born

David,

It must have been so wonderful to find your grandfather in America!

I'm sure he has been able to tell you a lot about his mother (and father!)
