My four, none of whom I knew.  The only grandparent I knew was my paternal grandmother, all the others died before or just after I was born.

Sarah Anne Higgins, born 1857 in Quinton Glos, died 1930 in Clifford Chambers.  My father was born at their home during WW1 and was very fond of her.

Mary Woodward, born 1856 Haselor Warwickshire, died 1948 in Stratford on Avon.  She lived in the tram bridge cottage in Stratford for many years and was living in the Alms Houses in Stratford at the time of her death.

Emily Bartholomew Stride, Born 1854 in Portsmouth.  She moved to Hanley to stay with an aunt who ran a pub and then met and married Luke Bennett.  She had her leg amputated shortly before her death in 1927.

Eliza Jane Barker, born 1868 in Newcastle under Lyme, died in Alsager 1937.  My mother has vivid memories of her.  Apparently she liked a good time with her family and they had big family get togethers.

I have met very few of my relatives, even the ones I know about.  Most of my father's family emigrated to Canada in the early 20th century and they are all over there.   We moved to Cornwall when I was only 4 and somehow we lost touch with my parent's cousins.  I am an only child and only have 3 first cousins, all are older than me and none of whom I am in contact with.

1881 and 1901 happenings for our great grandmothers
« Reply #48 on: Thursday 30 March 06 23:11 BST (UK) »
Of my four  great-grndmothers, two of the four with the birth names of BAKER and LEWIS were in England in 1881, and Canada in 1901.  One with  Mrs (SMITH) Kyne was in London in 1901 and MCGEE was in Australia.

Looking back to  1881 one was residing on Hope Street in Weymouth and the other was residing in Angel Alley in London.

Looking back to Hope street, of interest the youngest child
pf Elizabeth (Baker) Zelley was called Elsie Hope Zelley.
And checking out the names of the Hope Street folks throughout
the years is another interesting story with many names
and occupations, and an interesting history along with the nearby places such as Cove Row, Hope Square, Trinity
Road & Street.  One of the interesting side stories is the case of No. 11 Trinity and the folks that entered the doors throughout the 1900's.

Looking back to 1901, who were the family and neighbours
on a street where they lived re RICHARDSON & CLARK?

My 4 great grandmothers Emily Woodcock born Westminster 1852 she bore 11 children but 4 died very young.  Emma Butler born Clerkenwell 1851, she raised 10 children to adulthood and I believe I am supposed to look like her as I was the only one of 4 to have dark hair,  Jane Ann Hall was born in Wallsend in 1857 the daudhter of a shipwright who married a coalminer, but on every document after the marriage had a different occupation including running a pub called the Old Dolphin in 1891. Elizabeth Jane White born in Newcastle on Tyne in1853 she married a keelman and had 11 children that I know of but think there were 2 more that I am still tracing. All of them were still alive on 1901 census but sadly I didn't know any of them. I only knew my paternal grandmother and my maternal step grandfather, the others died before I was born. I would love to have time with them all to find out what it was really like. None of them were wealthy but they all did the best they could to love and care for their families and I believe that I am who I am today because of them.   Jabawak

Fun & Fantasy in days of yore: By Z

Slipping back through time, to Stoke Upon Trent, I wonder if
the teenager from Newcastle took care of young Tilly FARMER
in the daily dutues at the widow Jane Farmer's abode on High Street.

Did she ever go for a ride with young James PEARSON, the teenaged wagon maker?  Did they stop by to visit the
blacksmith Bill SUTTON.  And how many timesdid Ellen Jane
sit on any given sunny summer's day and watch the Barge workers float along such as Joseph WOOD and Mary COPE.

Did she have a good time with the local teens
such as the grocer's daughter o the likes of Alice CLAY
.Did they dance  with
the lads like the apprentice plumber Thomas DEAVILLE
or go for a summer outing or town event likea potter's paint party alongside the RILEY family or Sarah Jane EDWARDS.
