Re: unmarried ancestors...

Sometimes there is a clue in the baptism or birth cert [father's name will be slipped in as a christian name] but it is frustrating particularly WW1 when there was just a " + " put under father's name  which means the vicar knew the dead soldiers name but wasn't allowed to write it down...

My gt grans were Ames [Kempston, Bedfordshire]; Blackwell [West London]; and then the Irish lot!

cathy
Bedfordshire: Worker [Flitton]; Ames [Kempston]; Manton [Kempston]; Morris [?]; Valentine [Kempston]; Two & Osborn [Cranfield]

Herfordshire and West London: Brown [Kent in early 19th C]; Blackwell.
McCarthy [Clonakilty, County Cork - searching for needles in the haystack!] and LOSTY [Dublin]

So far I have all 4 pairs of great grandparents.
I have 6 of 8 pairs of 2great grandparents, the missing pair are my paternal grandfather's grandparents.
I've found 12 of 16 sets of 3great grandparents, again all 4 missing pairs are on my paternal grandfather's side.
And 12 of 32 pairs of 4great granparents (8 of those missing pairs are as above, only because I am missing my paternal grandfather's grandparents.

I have all 8 great grandparents.  And can go back a couple of generations further on all except my mother's maternal grandmother.  On my fathers line I can go back to my 10th great grandfather.  I don't have documentation for all the people but I do have fairly reliable source citations.

Brian

Had a "traumatic day with my laptop,  ::) ::) :'( so will post the photos of my g.grandmothers tomorrow.  I did list their names way back, but thought I'd give some more information and photos, now I've sorted out which photograph belongs to which g.gran (thanks to lovely Rootschatters on the photo restoration board).
