That's interesting Zelley. All of my great-grandmothers outlived their husbands and none remarried. One was for about 25 years, but from what my mom told me about her, I am sure no one would have wanted her (real piece of work). The other was just under 20 years, the sweetest soul who walked on the earth. The other two were widows for only a couple years.

Interestingly, I have a gg grandfather who lived as a widower for 55 years, raised two girls by himself. I'm surprised the church didn't find him a nice spinster lady to help him raise the girls and whatnot. Hmmmm

Of my 4 great-grandmothers, only one remarried (my maternal grandmother's mother).
My paternal grandfather's mother slept with the lodger while her husband was fighting in the navy (there's a family of half-great uncles out there somewhere we've lost contact with).
My paternal grandmother's mother, despite being widowed in 1924, remained single until she died 40-years later.
My maternal grandfather's mother died before her husband, oddly while in the cinema.  I'd love to know what film she was watching...

Three of mine outlived their husband but only by a few years and none remarried.

Interestingly the great grandfather who outlived his wife did remarry!

Of my four
Hannah Carver (nee Saunders) was a widow for 24 years, Elizabeth Griffin (nee Rendall) for only 18 months, Emma Allsop (nee Childs) died 29 years before James (he supposedly remarried but I haven't found the marriage) and Mary Ann Farr (nee Underwood) was a widow for 9 years.

It would be interesting to determine how many years
did they live as a widow or did they remarry.

One of my ggms was widowed at age 35 and remarried 6 years later (bearing two more children), but died when only 58.  Her second husband outlived her by just 6 months.

The others were much older when widowed
(a) 68 when ggf died - lived on 7 more years, dying aged 74
(b) 44 when ggf died - lived on 39 more years, dying aged 84
(c) 56 when ggf died - lived on 37 more years, dying aged 93

The last two are my mum's grandmothers.  My mum is obviously taking after them - 84 and still going strong.  My dad died when my mum was 56.

Have successfully researched all four of my great grandmothers.

Christina Mary Alling born 1874 in New York ... parents were from Denmark ... and died on Mothers Day 1958 ... a widow for 34 years.

Jane / Jennie Cole born 1861 in London .... parents were from England ...and died on her birthday in 1937 in New York ... a widow for 26 years.

Edith Daisey Jory born 1875 in San Francisco,Ca ... parents were from England .... and died 1950 in California. Died 14 months prior to my g grandfather.

Julia Murray Mellis born 1866 in Glasgow ... parents were from Scotland ...and died New Years Eve 1931 in California. Was a widow but I still haven't found my g grandfathers death information.

I have pictures of three of the four. Still looking for a picture of the fourth ... Julia Murray Mellis.

I also have my picture taken with two of them ... Christina and Edith.

They in part have made me what I am today and in their honor I am researching my family tree.
