Hi Chris,

I have been in touch with you in the past through another website but under a different name.  I live in Australia.  I think at one point we were conversing, along with Pat in New Zealand.  My ggg-grandfather is William Easton born 1811, Hugh Graham Easton's grandfather.  Good to hear from you!

Hi. I see there is mention in this series of messages regarding Hugh Graham and Barbara McDermid. I am interested in one of their children, Alexander Graham b. 1885. I'd be interested in more information on Hugh Graham and Barbara McDermid, their children and resulting families as well as any information on the ancestors of Hugh Graham. Alexander Graham is my wife's grandfather. Thanks.

Hello Saroy,

Welcome to Rootschat!  I have quite a lot of information on the Graham family.  It was one of those lines which fascinated me, and so even though not my direct line I pursued it as far as I could.  Some of my research is probably on this site somewhere, because I am sure I asked for help on it.  I don't know much about Alexander Graham though, just that he was born in 1885 in England, and he had five sisters; Isabella, Sarah, Janet, Mary and Alice.  All but Isabella, who was born in Glasgow, were born in England.  There may be more siblings but I can't find them in the 1891 census to check for sure!  Alexander was a dyeworks factory hand at Bonhill Dumbarton, Scotland in the 1901 census.

Hugh Graham was from Bute, originally a farmer from a long line of farmers, and Barbara was from Argyll.  Hugh's father was Alexander Graham and mother was Janet Johnstone.  Johnstones also owned farm land in Ayr.  Barbara's father was Donald McDermid, a master blacksmith from Argyll and her mother was Catherine Clark.  I can find no marriage record for Hugh and Barbara in England or Scotland.  Barbara's sister Catherine married David Easton.  That is one of the ways my line connects.

My Easton family were living in Bonhill for years, and Barbara and Hugh were both related to them through marriages, and I suppose that might be why the family settled there after returning from England, instead of going to Bute or Argyll.  I don't know when or where Hugh died, so I am presuming he probably died in England and then Barbara and the children returned to Scotland.

I have more information on this family and am happy to share but I hope this is enough for now!

Nina, thanks for the information you posted on the Graham family. This is great to have and I will update my information with what you have provided. Alexander Graham (son of Hugh Graham and Barbara McDermid) married Gertrude Olive Ashforth (The Ashforths ran a boarding house in Blackpool) in Flyde, Lancashire in 1918 and settled in Jamestown, Dunbartonshire. They had two children, Florence and Hugh Douglas. Alexander died in 1954 in Jamestown, Dunbartonshire and Gertrude Olive died in 1961 in Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire. Hugh Douglas married Margaret McIntosh in Glasgow in 1954 and had two children, Joy and Marlyn. Marlyn is my wife and we now live in Canada as does Hugh Douglas, Margaret, and Joy. I can send you the details of this line of Grahams if you wish.

My Roy family is from Glasgow with some Irish influence as well. Thanks again for the info.

You're welcome Stephen,

I have much more detail, such as dates of births, deaths and marriages and so on if you would like them.  It is probably easier if you contact me through email, however.  If you want the information, please PM me with your email address, and I will be happy to share.
