1901 census Hugh G. Easton aged 3
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 13:33 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am hoping someone can help find my missing ancestors.

I am interested in finding out who else lived with this little boy found in Durham:

Hugh G. Easton, aged 3    born Scotland,    Durham    So Shields, 1901 census.

I am hoping he is with his father William born in 1862 and mother Sarah born about 1875.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks very much soocatt.

It seems like the exact family except the dates are all out by exactly ten years....how odd! If I had not seen their ages on that extract I would swear they were my family.

I checked births in Scotland for Hugh G. Easton, and there is only the one in the whole of Scotland...

Wonder what the chances are of this being my family with an extra ten years added to ages for some unknown reason?

I have the birth registrations for my William senior and Junior and Hugh Graham Easton, but nothing for Sarah as yet; not even a census entry to try and confirm a birthplace.

I appreciate you looking for me.  Looks like this family will be a challenge!

Hi 2zpool,

Sarah was Sarah Jane Graham.  If the Hugh above is indeed mine, that "G." will stand for Graham.

I have cut and pasted my post from TalkingScot, which I posted there today:

William Easton was born in Bowling, Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton (Scotland) in 1862, the son of William Easton and Christina Clark. I have him on the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses. In 1894 he married Sarah Jane Graham (b. about 1875) in Jamestown Dumbarton, daughter of Hugh Graham and Barbara McDermid. Sarah was the niece of his brother's wife.

William and Sarah Easton had William, b. 1895, Hugh Graham, 1897 and Mary Agnes Graham, b and d 1899.

Armed with this information, I have tried to find the following documents and IGI entries (for Scotland) with no success whatever:

1901 census for William and Sarah, and children
Birth for Sarah Graham
Death registrations for William and Sarah
Marriage registration for Hugh Graham and Barbara McDermid
Death registration for Hugh Graham (before 1894) - I have his wife's

I thought William and Sarah Easton had perhaps left the country before 1901 so I checked here http://213.161.80.228/ . I was able to find a 3 year old Hugh G. Easton in Durham who was born in Scotland (I didn't pay to look at the image). I then asked for help on (this) site and (soocatt) posted this for me:

William Easton head mar 38 pityard labourer Scotland
Sarah J 36 South Shields
William son 15 Scotland
Hugh G 13 Scotland

111 marsden Street RG13/4731 f161 p38

Apart from the names all fitting, the ages are all ten years out! I can't understand how I got a Hugh aged 3 at 1901 census site, but (soocatt)  has found one ten years older. There is no mention of a 13 year old Hugh at the site I visited. And I only found William b. 1895 on a whim to see if my William had a son ten years YOUNGER than that English census...and he did. Can this just be a huge coincidence?

However, looking at that entry I searched again for Sarah born in England in the (Scottish) 1881; there are two for aged 5-7 but none for ages 10-20, and neither is my Sarah. A general search of the 1881 (Sarah had a sister called Isabella b. 1872 in Glasgow) didn't throw up likely possibilities either.

So I am at a dead end. I began this search just looking for the death of William born 1862, as he is the only one of his family of nine kids that I don't have.

So after probably confusing you to death, any suggestions please?

Nina,

I looked at the actual 1901 census.  Here is what I see.

RG13/4731 folio 161 page 37
South Shields
Marsden Street
William Easton, Head, Mar, 38, Pityard Labor, below ground, Scotland
Sarah J Easton, Wife, Mar, 26, Durham South Shields
William Easton, Son, 5, Scotland
Hugh G. Easton, Son, 3, Scotland

There are enumerator ticks in front of all the ages.  Which might account for someone thinking it was 15 and 13.

Hi Nina
I'm so sorry I had been reading the enumerators tick as a one.  As soon as ~I saw your message about the age difference I double checked but by then everyone else had answered.  Sorry.
