1850s/1860s Royal Marines
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 09:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I don't know if you can help me with a family research query that's proving a real problem. My GGG Grandfather was Daniel Hinton. We can't find his marriage but on his son's birth certificate in Dec 1862 he gives his occupation as "Private Royal Marines". He doesn't appear on the 1861 census - his wife does under her maiden name so the marriage must have taken place after March 1861. Nor does he appear on the 1851 and by 1871 his wife gives herself as widow. We also can't find his death anywhere.

Can anyone point me in the direction of getting info for him if he was serving in the army at that time?

Anything that would help us find out more would be most gratefully received.

Many thanks
Helen

Hi Helen

Daniel could have married and died abroad, have you searched the overseas records?.

Where was the son born?

Hi Wendi,

Thank you for your reply. His son, William Hinton was born in Dec 1862 in Camden Town, London. His birth was registered in Pancras district. His mother was Susan Ann Morgan, and she in on the 1861 census living with her parents in Pancras/Camden Town. She is given as unmarried at that time. Between 1862 and 1868 she had 4 children - all born in or around London/Woolwich so I don't think she was ever abroad.

We can't find Daniel's death, but bearing in mind his youngest child was born 1868, he must have died between then and 1871. Possibly the Royal Marines were at Woolwich barracks?

One last thing. When his son William married in the 1890s he gave his father Daniel's occupation as 'clerk' suggesting he left the army before he died????

Many thanks

Helen

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=56 - you could try this, presuming he was in the Woolwich division.

ADM 81 at the National Archives holds:

Entry books of in- and out-letters, discharge and embarkation books, registers of marriages and baptisms, etc kept by Divisional headquarters at the Royal Marine Barracks at Woolwich.

The overseas records are indexed at www.1837online.com in case he did die overseas/at sea.
