Emotional experience
« on: Monday 27 March 06 08:53 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,

I just wanted to share a very emotional moment with you, something which has made all of my research so far worthwhile, and in doing so hope my experience encourages others to continue searching for their past.

I had the chance to visit Holbeach Town cemetery on Sunday 26th March, looking for graves which I knew existed (from records located in Spalding library). I walked from one end of the cemetery to the other and up and down every row of headstones. I found what i was looking for, a handful of my Broughton ancestors last resting places.

Its strange but I knew they were there when I arrived, and of course I know they'd been there when as a teenager I'd visited area and also when as an adult I'd driven to many of the pubs in the town for pleasure.

But, standing there looking at my Great Great Grandparents memorial I shed a tear or two. Samuel Broughton (1838) was one of twin boys, his brother died at or around birth (his death was registered at the same time as their birth. Samuel's father died about a year after his birth. I would like to eventually find both their graves, but don't really expect I will.

One interesting aside is that I'd struggled to work out Samuel's wifes maiden name. The IGI records is as either Holborn or Wright, the census's helped and eventually I found it was Holborn. But, over her life, she, or more likely parish clerks, enumerators and other officials actual changed it to Oban. Clearly as a result of its phonetic spelling and our lilting Lincolnshire accent. Her gravestone calls her Ann Oban Broughton.

Either way, that is one small part of a huge jigsaw puzzle which I continue to assemble. Thank you for reading this little bit of my history and good look exploring your own..

Primary research is Broughton family from Lincolnshire, England. Also Sandall and Tabiner from Lincolnshire; Taylor, Bennett and White from, Monmouth, Staffs and Barrow in Furness.

I found some last summer and I too shed a tear, sometimes it feels like you know these people.  You track them through BMD and census returns and then you find a grave.

Good luck with your hunting.

When you actually visit their resting place you can't help but get emotional, knowing that you have tracked them down through all those years of their lives.
I was searching for my gt gt grandad's in Halifax cemetery, found it in the end on a hill I nearly rolled down the hill it was so steep, bet he was laughing !!

Roy, Kerry & Sue,
I also found the records for Spalding cemetery in the library extremely usefull and was able to find my Great Great Grandparents gravestone. It was not far inside the cemetery and easily located due to the plan in the records. I wonder if all local libraries have these records. On my other side of the family the graves in the village Church yard at Gedney Hill have been recorded and inscriptions copied. This is especially good since a lot of the headstones are of sandstone and have weathered very badly over the years and are now very difficult to read.
Regards
Keith

:'( How lucky you are to be able to visit the graveyard.  A few months ago I got my great-great-great grandparents death certificates and realised that when I was a child I had actually played in the graveyard they are buried in - without realising that they were there!  My great-great grandfather and also a number of other family members are also buried there too!

I now live on the other side of the world and cannot get back to England often, so I really envy you all!!  I must say that if I ever do get to visit the place, I'm sure I'll shed a few tears myself too!!  By the way, I think I may have some ancestors buried near yours, in Spalding!!

Jane

I received an email this morning with the cemetery and burial plot numbers of two of my relatives.  Its the first time that I have researched burial plots.  It brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat, so I understand completely.
