James & Elizabeth DENMEAD 1856/7
« on: Sunday 26 March 06 05:16 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to get confirmation on James and Elizabeth Denmead and their children travelling on the ship Escort in 1856/7. ???

We have calculated by birth dates they should have had 5 children and then Emma who was born aboard during the journey.

The ship Escort left the port of Southampton on 6th Oct 1856 and arrived in Melbourne Australia on 14th Jan 1857.

If anyone is able to assist  in confirming the details of this family we would be most gratefull.

Thank you in advance. :)

Hello Anja

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

It would help us to help you if you could tell us what information you already have and what you are seeking.

Do you have the family on the 1841 and 1851 censuses?  Do you know where they originated (Somerset?) and what James' occupation was?

The only likely marriage I can find is in Abergavenny, possibly to an Elizabeth HOLDER (freebmd - incomplete record)

Hoping to help

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots,

Thank you for your reply. :D, greatly appreciated.  My apologies for not including more detail - my mistake.

I actually don't have much on them outside of Australia - only just found them today as travelling to Australia.  We have their history of sorts in Australia.

Elizabeth Holder and James Denmead marriage is them 9th April 1850 Long Ashton but that is the record the lodged in Australia, which is 5 yrs after the birth of their first child Sarah Ann b:5th March 1845 Long Ashton.

From what I have been able to find out and all unconfirmed,
James b: 6th Jan 1821 Kingston Seymour,
Elizabeth Holder b:1823 Long Ashton (bapt: 4th May 1823 Long Ashton)
children
Sarah Ann - b: 5th March 1845 Long Ashton
Martha - b: ?1847 Monmouth Gwent Wales
Eliza - b: ?1848 Tredegar Monmouth Wales
Charles - b: ?1853 Long Ashton
Alfred Henry - b: 20th Aug 1845 Long Ashton
Emma - b: 6th Dec 1856 aboard the ship Escort
The rest of their children were born in Australia

I have not done English (now Wales) research before so am at a total loss where to start and how to go about it all.  Your guidance in how to proceed is valued.

Regards
Anja

Thanks for the reply Anja - it is looking promising, with the coincidence of names and places!  :)

Can I suggest you look for the births of the other children in the GRO Birth Index (currently free at Ancestry: http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8964 )

Use the dates you have as a guide and you are probably looking for births in Long Ashton Registration District

Long Ashton
Created 1st January 1897 (renaming of Bedminster district).
Sub-districts : Long Ashton; St. George; Yatton.
GRO volumes : 5c (1899-1930).
Abbots Leigh, Backwell, Barrow Gurney, Bishopsworth, Brockley, Chelvey, Clapton, Clevedon, Dundry, Easton in Gordano, Flax Bourton, Kenn, Kingston Seymour, Long Ashton, Nailsea, North Weston, Portbury, Portishead, Tickenham, Walton in Gordano, Weston in Gordano, Winford, Wraxall, Yatton.
Registers now divided between North Somerset and Bristol districts.

and (I think) Pontypool

Pontypool
Created 1st July 1837.
Sub-districts : Llangibby; Pontypool; Usk.
GRO volumes : XXVI (1837-51); 11a (1852-1930).
Glascoed, Goytrey, Gwehellog, Kemys Commander, Llanbaddock, Llandegveth, Llangeview, Llangibby, Llanhilleth, Llanllhowel, Llanthewyvach, Llantrissent, Llanvihangel Pont-y-Moile, Llanvrechva, Mamhilad, Monkswood, Panteg, Pontypool, Trevethin, Trostney, Usk.
Registers now divided between Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Monmouth districts.

Unfortunately, your family has left before the 1861 census, which would perhaps have confirmed this family.  There were not many with surnames that were close to yours.

I would definitely recommend getting the marriage certificate - you can find the ref on Ancestry too, but shout if you get stuck!  That was lucky, guessing at the correct one!  I told you the name is unusual!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

definitely

This deffinately is them - how can I get a copy of it without going through Ancestry Com as I do not have a subscription to them and don't have the funds to join.

What does HO107/2448/853/36  mean ??

Noticed that Sarah is spelt with 2 'r's - is that right ?? not seen it spelt that way before - rather novel if it is.

Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

Hello again

First, don't worry about the spelling!  Sarah probably would have been surprised too!  When transcribing censuses we look at the image and try to write exactly what was written - it could just be that the enumerator couldn't spell!

The HO107 part indicates that it is either the 1851 or 1841 census (unfortunately they both start the same)  In this case 1851.  The rest is a unique reference for this family in this census - Piece number, Folio number and Page in the enumerator's book.  It is a good idea to get into the habit of making a note of these with your records, then if you need to ask someone to find the next censes it is a quick way for them to look at this one first.  Later censuses start RG, so RG9 = 1861, RG10 = 1871 etc.

At the moment the full BMD indexes are available FREE on Ancestry, but payable on sites such as 1837online and Familyrelatives.  Freebmd also covers a lot, but is not yet complete.

To purchase a cert you need the reference number and names, plus date & place - to order from the GRO.  Or you can order direct from the local Registrar.

Have a read of the Beginners Board - there is lots of useful info on there.

Let us know how you get on.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
