Completed Surrey Marriage Index Look up please
« on: Saturday 25 March 06 17:58 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if there are any Layton marriages on this.  Probably Putney area.    Any reference would help as I am trying to find children of James Layton and Ann ? in the late 1700s.  I have a will for John Layton died 1816 and his wife was Mary.   I think one of their nieces married a Chapman and would like to know how she fits into my tree - if she does!
Many thanks
Andrea

Many thanks for that Jane.   I have been chasing this particular lot for years - trying actually to get them back to Cambridgeshire.  I shall ponder over these two.

I came across this posting while looking for Laytons in Putney. I also have wills for John and Mary Layton and I do know where the Chapman fits in with them
I realise your posting was rather a long time ago but if you would like to compare Layton info please get in touch.

Hi
The line I am researching is actually Lavender Layton who is my husband's ancestor.  I have not looked at this branch for some time so will have to get out my notes.   I would be very interested in what you have on them.

Hi Andrea,

I came across the Laytons while looking for my aunt's family - Townsends who emigrated to New Zealand in 1850.
I have been able to find the Layton family who seem to be mostly Tea Brokers or Colonial Produce brokers many living in Lime St, City of London.

Frances m. Edward Townsend
Elizabeth b.c.1758 m. James Oram Clarkson
Ann b.c.1767  m. Andrew Crew Greville
John b.c.1750 m. Mary Kellaway
James b.c.1766 m. 1. Maria Hillyard, 2. Sophia Clarkson
Charles b.c.1768 m. Matilda Bryett
Andrew m. 1. Susanna Crew Meggs, 2. Frances Parr

The daughter of Andrew and Ann Greville, Margaret Anna Greville b.c. 1797 m. William Webb Chapman.

I have found out more about the descendants of some of them so if you think this may fit in your family please let me know.
I have not been able to find the parents of these children - any clues?

Best wishes
Victoria

Hi Victoria
I don't think there is a connection.  I am stuck at Lavender Layton, died 1816 and I have his will, who married Sarah Wakeford in 1773 in Shoreditch.   Their son Lavender 1776- 1865 married Charlotte Aris/Avis.   They appear to have been baker/confectioners so not quite in the same league as Tea Brokers.
Family rumour has it that our Layson came from Yorkshire but I cannot substantiate that.  The only earlier Lavender Layton I have come across was in Cambridgeshire but he died young without issue as far as I know.  I feel he must be connected somehow as it is such an odd combination of names.  I have a lot about that branch who lived near Ely.

Well, if I come across any Lavender Laytons I will bear you in mind.
Good luck
