Missing from 1891 census - can anyone help?
« on: Saturday 25 March 06 13:07 GMT (UK) »
I am unable to trace my great-grandmother and grandmother on the 1891 census. They are Marion Catherine Rose (born Jones in Westbury Leigh, Wiltshire 1856 and Mabel Catherine Rose Born Chicago, United States 1883).

Marion returned from America sometime after 1885 with Mabel and Arthur (born Chicago 1885). I have traced Arthur on 1891 census age 6 years at a private school in Twickenham but no trace of Marion or Mabel.

I understand that my grandmother stayed with family on her return from America and went to school in Marylebone area of London. Marions first husband George Rose (born 1860) came from London.

Marion remarried in 1895 a Henry Stiles (born 1845) in Keynsham, Somerset and by 1897 they were Innkeepers of Full Moon Inn, Rudge, Somerset which was near to where Marions family lived. I can't trace Henry on 1891 census either!

Can anyone help me find Marion and Mabel in 1891?

Many thanks

Annie

Hi Annie,

I think I might (not 100% sure though) have found Mabel in 1891:

RG12/10 folio 57 page 24
St Mary Paddington

49 Amberley Road
Charles Laywell - Head - age 50 and born Warminster, Wiltshire - a plumber
Lydia Laywell - Wife - age 49 and born Westbury, Wiltshire
Mabel Base (It could also be ROSE though, looks very like Rose to me) - Visitor - age 7 and born in America

Hope this helps!

Hi Millerina

Many thanks for finding this information for me. I have been going round in circles for weeks trying to solve the problem!

I think it is too much of a coincidence not to be Mabel, she would have been 7 on the day of the census as her birthday was May. Lydia Laywell was born in Westbury as was my great-grandmother. The spelling could easily be Rose not Base. I gather that incorrect spelling on the census in not uncommon, I will bear this in mind in future hunting!

Thank you

Annie
