Harley Street, Portsea
« on: Friday 24 March 06 20:25 GMT (UK) »
I have found my father's grandfather, and two of his great uncles, all living at different addresses in Harley Street, Portsea in the 1871 - 1901 census.

The street was in St Mary's parish in the St Pauls Municipal Ward, but does not seem to exist any more - I guess that it was probably bombed during the war as St Mary's parish was close to the dockyard.

Can anyone help me find out more about Harley Street ? I'd like to know where it was, when it was built and what happened to it if possible.

Hi Emma,

You might try Portsmouth Library

http://www.portsmouth.gov.uk/learning/1028.html

Right at the bottom of the link they have an email address for "Reference & specialised enquiries"

Good luck

Hi Emma,

As you say Harley Street no longer exists, but if you use streetmap and look for Stamford Street in Portsmouth, you will be in the correct area.    Harley Street was the street to the north of this - Wimpole Street crossed it. In fact it is just to the east of St Mary's Church.  The area was probably bombed in the war as you say and since been redeveloped since.  Obviously it existed before 1871 but how long before I can't say.

Thank you both for your replies.

Portsmouth Library were extremely helpful and confirmed the location as approximately between Fitzroy Walk and King Albert Street off Fratton Road.

If anyone else is interested, it was built sometime between 1851-1861 and demolished between 1969 and 1971 as part of a large re-development west of Fratton Road.

Hi Emma

Thanks for letting us know how your inquiry went at Portsmouth Library, that's the 2nd good reply I know of.  After all there is no point suggesting a search avenue unless they are willing to respond well  ;D

Glad it was of some use
