THEOBALD Essex/Suffolk
« on: Friday 24 March 06 09:39 GMT (UK) »
I have put this query on the Suffolk board as well as the Essex Board because of the Cavendish link and also because the Belchamps and Gestingthorpe are close to the Essex/Suffolk border.

I have two William Theobalds, one of whom I believe is my ancestor, the William Tibbel who married Sarah Willis at Stebbing in 1802.

William (1) Tibbol baptised 13 April 1773 at Belchamp St Pauls, his parents were William Tebbell (of Cavendish) and Elizabeth Mason (of Belchamp St Pauls) who married 1 Sep 1772 at Belchamp St Pauls.

William (2) Tibbald son of Elizabeth Tibbald baptised 22 Aug 1775 at Gestingthorpe.

Does anyone out there believe or have proof that William 1 or 2 married someone other than Sarah Willis? ???

I have checked the PRs for Belchamp St Pauls, Belchamp Otten, Belchamp Walter and Gestingthorpe and found no marriage or burial entry for either William in any of those places.  Nor did I find any siblings in any of those places so the parents of both Williams must have moved on soon after the baptisms.

Hi suffolk suepip,

I said to my wife after putting my post on the board "I wonder how long it will be before someone shoots me down in flames"

I had a feeling about William 1 and from your post it looks as though his family may have gone back to Cavendish.  On my next visit to the UK and Essex (2008), I'll have to try and fit in a trip to one of the Suffolk Record Offices to check if a William and Elizabeth Theobald had any children baptised at Cavendish after 1772.  I won't give up hope on him yet but nor will I be holding my breath.

I was aware of the Borley marriage, I'm fairly confident the groom was William Theobald son of Samuel and Elizabeth, he was baptised 18 Oct 1773 at Borley.

Well it still leaves William 2 firmly in the picture (for now), although I expect it will be a devil of a job to track his mother down, finding his father probably impossible, although he might have been a William!!!.  Unless I missed something, Elizabeth doesn't appear to have been baptised or married in Gestingthorpe, I didn't have time to check burials.  Wouldn't be at all surprised to find she was sent from another parish to give birth to William, perhaps quite a distance from home, possibly even shipped in from over the border in Suffolk!

My William named his first daughter Elizabeth and as there are no Elizabeths in his wife's family that is possibly a clue to his mother's name, since both William 1 & 2 both had mothers named Elizabeth that clue is not much help in this case!

Thanks for your help, even though it dashed my hopes somewhat, it is appreciated.

Regards

Their third child was William Theobald born 1778 in Great Waldingfield; Baptised: 29th September, 1778

I have now found the William Tibbel (Theobald) I have searched so long for, he was baptised in 1776 at Chelmsford, Essex.  His parents were John Tibbles and Elizabeth French who married in 1774 at Chelmsford, unfortunately neither appear to have been baptised at Chelmsford, so again the hunt is on.

Prior to finding William I had been searching in ever increasing circles around the last reference point, his marriage at Stebbing, Essex.  Then having found out the Chelmsford PRs were online and just idly searching them, out popped William Tibbel (spelt Tibbles).  Fortunately William was not married or buried in Chelmsford and quite a few of William's sibling names matched those of his own children, so accepting him as my ancestor was made easy.

Many thanks to those of you who tried to help me, research can be quite frustrating at times when you live in Australia and all your ancestors were born in the UK.  I do get over to the UK on average every two years but never have enough time in the Essex Records Office, so people like myself are very grateful for any help we receive along the way.

I am always very interested in Theobalds no matter what county they come from so none of the info was wasted.

Regards.
