HI to all the Ferriers on  this website.

Wow! I am really impressed.

I have recently been introduced to the Ferrier family via one of my step-daughters whose natural father is James Richard F. (b. Geelong, Victoria, Aus. 1941).

Her GF: William John F. (b Queenscliff, Victoria, Aus 1907).

GGF: William John F (b. Warrnambool, Victoria, Aus 1881).

GGGF: John Robert Ferrier (b. Warrnambool, Victoria, Aus 1858).

On making inquiries to the Warrnambool Maritime Museum, step daughter discovered that the elder Wm John Ferrier is to be honored next month (August 21) for his bravery in rescuing passengers from the shipwreck La Bella, 1905.  He was presented with a bravery medal and a small purse of donations - also a congratulatory letter from the Governor-General and one from the Victorian Governor.

My step daughter, once her credentials were proven as one of the descendants, has been invited to attend this celebration which will involve a new light show about the shipwreck and rescue.

She is now fired with enthusiasm and wanting to know more about her ancestors and I found on IGI a listing for John Ferrier as the father of John Robert Ferrier.

Here is where the conflict comes in.  IGI lists John Ferrier as born 1830 in Cardross, Dunbarton, Scotland yet another member of the family has his birthplace as being Arbroath, Angus, Scotland.

I cannot link up with either of these births.  Will post more later but would appreciate some help or guidance.

MY FERRIER ;D
Found this topic - so just putting this 'out there' - never know when a connection might be spotted by someone!

Fife OPR - born 12 October 1830, Agnes FERRIER, natural daughter of John FERRIER, Wright, Boarhills and of Agnes TURPIE daughter of the late John TURPIE Wright in Kingsbarns baptized.

This baptism indicates, Agnes FERRIER was illigitimately born?  but she is baptised as FERRIER, is FERRIER in the Census 1841 & 1851, at her marriage 1857, in mms for births of her children and ms at her death in 1916.  She was also sometimes named as "Nancy", a pet form of Agnes. Her father is named as John FERRIER  on both her marriage & death records. Her mother Agnes TURPIE is stated age 40 in the 1841 Census but she could be as old as abt 44 (I haven't found her in 1851 nor her death anytime after 1841 (She is not the Agnes TURPIE living in Croft Dyke, Ceres in 1851 and 1861 who was Agnes nee SMITH/SMYTH b abt 1806, who died 1869, widow of TURPIE).

So - not sure who John FERRIER, my 3x Gt GF  is.

Can find no trace of a John FERRIER in the 1841 Census for Boarhills Village or surrounds. But in the Boarhills census of 1841 and 1851, there is a David FERRIER, Shoemaker who was born 1784 St Andrews Fife to John FERRIER and Christian YOUNG. Possibly (probably) my John is related to this David.  A son, brother, even a father etc. (I have no pre-conception of John's age based on his 'baby-mother'' Agnes TURPIE's age  - he may have been a lot older or a lot younger than her).

The IGI has no sibling of David named as "John" (there is only one sibling recorded on IGI, a sister). However, David and his wife Barbara LESLIE did have a son named John - born 1812 in Boarhills. And it appears he may have been a Carpenter ( my John was a "Wright"). This John is about 11 to 15 years younger than Agnes TURPIE and he would have been only about 18 in 1830 when Agnes' illigitimate daughter was born while Agnes herself was at the least abt 32 at the time, and possibly was abt 36. A large age gap, but not outside the realms of possibility .

John FERRIER, son b 1812 of David and Barbara maybe the following on the Census 1841/1851  - he is also in Angus up until the 1881 Census (I haven't as yet purchased his death cert to confirm his parentage):

CENSUS 1841: Balgownie - Essie & Nevay, Angus
Enumeration District: 1, Folio: 0 Page: 6
John FERRIER 28, Wright - N
Christian FERRIER, 27 - N
David FERRIER 4 - Y
Alexander FERRIER 2 - Y
Jean FERRIER 8 mnths, - Y

CENSUS 1851: North Street, Newtyle, Angus
Head: John FERRIER 38, Carpenter, b St Andrews Fife
Wife: Ann 44, b Clunie, Perthshire
Son: David 14, b Glamis, Forfar
Son: Alexander 12, b Glamis Forfar
Dau: Jane 10, b Glamis Forfar
Son: John 8, b Mergle??. Forfar

There was another FERRIER family associated with Boarhills - James Frederick FERRIER (1808-1864) , a Philosopher/Writer who later in life lived at "Westfield House" in Boarhills Fife from at least approx 1845 and died there. His father was John FERRIER of Edinburgh "writer to the signet" - who is probably the same John FERRIER who died at Arbroath, Angus in 16 April 1822 age 93, "long in his Majesty's Service" (The Edinburgh magazine and literary miscellany, Volume 89, 1822 page 696).

I remain facinated   by  "Wright" and "Writer"  ;D

Cheers

Hi. I am new to this, but researching my Ferrier ancestry. Four generations( 1820's) remain in Montgomery County, Pa. Is anyone aware of  relations prior to that time from abroad that settles in PA. Any informations would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi just caught this string.  I am connected to Jillruss and we have exchanged info before, via her Charles Bissett Ferrier who appears to be the brother of my Alexander. Hi Jill hope you are geting further than I am.

I am trying to trace Alexander's daughter Mary Ferrier born 28th of Jan 1808 Perth and still living 1843 when her mother's will is proved then she disappears.  In 1841 she is in Bridge Lane, Perth giving her age as 28 but it would be 33 if she was born 1808.  Anyone heard of her, she may have married as she would have a bit of money as she appears to be the last of her siblings left alive and her mother had a few businesses and properties.

Another Ferrier I am seeking is Charles Ferrier born 22 Apr 1861 at 22 Dens Brae, Dundee  to Theodosia Ferrier, no father on bc.  On the 1871 census Charles and his also illigitimate brother James had taken the name Porter after their step-father who I do not believe could have been the real father.  After Andrew Porter & Theodosia died in 1898 James reverted to Ferrier.  But I cannot trace Charles under either Ferrier or Porter after 1871.  Evelina
Porter & Chalmers - Perthshire, Laing - West Fife, Stirrat - Glasgow, Ferguson - Glasgow & Skye, Coulter & Wilson - Northern Ireland, Kean - Glasgow & Northern Ireland. Ferrier - Perthshire. Lawton - Church Lawton, Cheshire.  McClure/McLure - Coatbridge

I am also a related to the Ferriers, although as yet I haven't noticed any of my lot being mentioned!  The furthest back I have reached is a John Ferrier and his wife Janet Anderson who married in 1796 in Eassie & Nevay (I have copy if useful to anyone). They had at least 2 children William Ferrier baptised/born 1811 in Eassie (who I believe married a Catherine and had John 1832, Janet 1835, Margaret 1837, Charles 1845 and Betsy 1846).

John and Janet had another son John born/baptised June 1806 (have copy) in Eassie. John went on to marry Janet Robertson in 1829 in Longforgan and they seem to have lived in Arbroath. They had 8 children that I know of:-

Jessie b1830, John b1833, Agnes b1834, James b1839, George b1841, William 1845, Jemima b1847 and Davina b1850. My ancestor was Jessie who seems to have been a bit busy as she had around 7 children, all of which seem to have been illegitimate although she did eventually marry a John Carnegie. Jessie's children were:-

David Stevenson (died as an infant), Georgina Cruickshanks (1852 - 1910), James Cruikshanks (1857 - 1866), David & Margaret Smart (1859 twins), Susan Ferrier (1862), and Jessie Gourlay Gibson Ferrier (1867).

Would love to hear from anyone if this fits into their tree and if I can help anybody else I am more than willing  ;D

I think my part of the Ferrier tree links up with Sarah's.  I am a direct descendant of Jessie Ferrier, through her daughter Margaret Smart who, when she married my great-grandfather, had gone back to calling herself Margaret Ferrier.  Sadly, her twin brother (David Smart) died at about 5 months.  Jessie successfully sued the father, David Smart, for child support.  I have a transcript of the court order I can share.

I had hit a research roadblock with Jessie, so Sarah, your information adds significantly!  I'd love to get more of the details and/or source materials.  I just joined RootsChat and not sure how information exchange works.  Thanks so much.

Peter
