Schools in Beeston 1920's
« on: Wednesday 22 March 06 18:00 GMT (UK) »
Where can I find a list of girls' schools in Beeston in the 1920's?

I've got 2 photos one of which was taken by T or F Moore of Church St. Beeston.

Would be grateful for any information.

Thanks

Hi Erika,

I have an aged relative in Beeston who would, I think, have been at school in the 1920s. I have sent her a copy of your photo to see how good her memory is!!!!! It will take a few days and I can't promise anything but you never know. There wouldn't have been many schools in Beeston then. She could even be on the photo!!!!
 Keep your fingers crossed.

Hi

I would think it is Church Street school  in Beeston. The building is still there. I am going to choir practice tonight. Although it will be dark by 7.30pm I will have a look round to see where it might be. If the weather is OK on Sunday I will try and take a photo. I can also ask at Church on Sunday as there are plenty of older people there who went to school in Beeston.

If I am correct I can send you more information later. My Mum was at Church Street school but she was born in 1926.

Do you have a name and/or address of the person who went to the school? Which is the person on the photo as I may know some other people on your photo.

Hi Jane and Eric

Many thanks for your replies. I am delighted you both may have, hopefully, something useful to add to my continued quest into the past!! :)

My mum Rose May Plumridge is on the left of the photograph, 2nd row from the back and 2nd in from the left. She was born in 1909 and moved to Beeston around 1915??

She later went on to work at Ericssons and married in 1934
at The Union Church, Bramcote Lane, Dovecote.

I am not familiar with Nottingham, so these names and places remain a mystery to me.

Thank you both again for your interest and maybe someone will remember something.

Hi Erika

The Church your Mum got married in will be John Clifford Baptist Church on Dovecote Lane in Beeston

http://www.johnclifford.org.uk/index.php

It has just celebrated its 200th anniversary. It was called the Union Church because it is part of the Baptist Union.

A photo of the school I think it is is available at

http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/

click the search tab
enter beeston under town or village
go to photo 57
Church Street girls junior and infants school.

Please can you rescan the photo at a higher resolution and slightly larger image so I can enlarge it and print it. I can then see if anyone recognises the photo and in particular your Mum.

Hi Erika

We had a debate at church this morning as to whether it is Church St or Nether Street school. Do you know when the photo was taken or how old the girls are? I still think it is Church St and that they are 11 years and under.

I took my camera but the school is currently 'wrapped in plastic' as they are sandblasting it. They are converting it into apartments and have built on rather nice new extensions. The original building has not been disturbed so when they remove the plastic I will still be able to take a photo and it will be nice and clean.

I cleaned up your photo but need a better one to enlarge.

I have sent you a PM as well.

Hi Jane

Thanks for the reply and the clean up. I've rescanned at 300dpi so will attach.

I have absolutely no idea when the photo was taken, but would guess at the very early 20's as my mum was born November 1909.

Perhaps the formidable looking teacher in the centre will ring a bell somewhere, or are there records kept of schools and staffing in existence?

Thanks again for your time.
Best wishes

Hello. Did you find out which school this was by any chance? I have been researching an ancestor of mine who was a school mistress Lizzie Pierrepont and am trying to find a photo of her and thought that the woman seated could be her?
