Kerr, Ballywalter
« on: Tuesday 21 March 06 17:06 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me trace dates for Hugh Kerr my great-grandfather died circa 1927. His children were (my grandmother)  Elizabeth (died Easter 1958 in Newtownards, married circa 1920 to John Arthur McCord, Ballymacarratt) , James, Thomas, Edward, George, Harry, Agnes, Mary Jane and Robert.
I believe Hugh worked for Lady Dunleath.
Any pointers gratefully received

 Could this be your man?

You might want to check the extensive listing of Kerrs on Ros' site.

Good luck,

Pat

Here is a Hugh in the 1901 census:
Hugh Kerr Springvale Ballywalter 1901_Census Ballywalter Division

There are several others listed in the Head-of-Household index in Caora.

Many thanks Pat.
Good sources which I wasn't aware of but I don't think the first is my man as I am fairly sure of his children's names.
I will browse those sites you suggest for other branches also!
Best regards,
Gary

Hiya Gary,

I'm not sure where the records of the Dunleath Estates would be. They have been farming in quite a large way for many years and would have record books about employees. Do you know which branch of the Christian faith was followed by Hugh and his family .. were they C of I, Presbyterian or Roman Catholic?

Chris

Just saw your kind reply, Christopher.

Dunleath's record are in PRONI but nothing of much interest - mostly political, little to do with the running of the estate.

I found Hugh's grave in Greyabbey so have progressed a little.

The family were CoI and I am now looking to trace Hugh's father Henry, trader/hawker born c1830.

Thanks for your attention,

Regards,
Gary
