You'd be very lucky to find a convenient list online.  First, when was this?  Armed with the date, you could look up the directories for the period.  The local library would be able to help if they're not on www.historicaldirectories.org
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hi,
Have you tried contacting the pub, it has it's own web site which gives a brief history of the place and also a lovely photo of the building.

http://steve.pickthall.users.btopenworld.com/ssx1867/alfriston1867.html - well, by 1867 it was run by James Page.  1855 on historical directories also gives James Page at the Star, and 1851 also.

Do you have Emma's birth certificate? That should give an address for her birth and father's occupation.    You might be able to confirm at least part of the story from that.

Hi there,

I would have thought the place to start would be either the brewery if the place was a "tied house" and/ or the county archives office.

Good luck.

Hi

The record office near to Alfriston would be a good starting point,  they may well have a licensd vitular book, if this book has survived and been handed in it will list the person that owned the public house.

Perhaps the father owned the public house but didn't run the business himself? This might explain why he is not listed in the trade directory.

Contact east Sussex record office and ask if they one and give the name and dates you are interested in - they may look for you.

The pub may have changed hands serveral times and been taken up by a bigger brewery, which could mean that the original deeds have gotten lost on the way (this often happens unfortunately) - this may be why the silence when you contacted them before.

Hi Leolinedancer and Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I would encourage you to follow up all the good ideas you have been given here.  Lemontree's suggestion of the East Sussex Records Office is a really good one (they prob. have an e-mail address for inquiries if you search for them on line) as I had a similar instance with a relative and if they brewed beer on the premises (and at the time you are talking about they probably did) they had to have a license issued by the local authority - in my case they even had her signature on the court register, which they showed me.  ;D

Good luck
