1841 Census Lookup Please
« on: Tuesday 21 March 06 06:59 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the Baskerville family from Hale and/or Plumbley.

Harriot (born approximately 1817?)
David (born approximately 1840)
Thomas (born approximately 1786)

I am also looking for David Baskerville (Sr.) birthdate unknown. Although the other census information I have shows Harriot to be unmarried, listed on David (Jr.'s) marriage and death certificates, it shows his father as David Baskerville and mother as Harriot Baskerville (maiden name was also Baskerville) He was deceased by the time his son was married in 1864, but I believe he could have died before 1851. His occupation was listed as "Carter".

In the 1851 Census

71 Towland, Hale, Cheshire
Baskerville Thomas Head Mar 64 Ag Lab Over Peover
Baskerville Harriot Daughter U 39 Launderer Plumbley
Baskerville George Son Wid 29 Ag Lab Over Peover
Baskerville William Son U 36 Ag Lab Over Peover
Baskerville David Grandson   9 Scholar Plumbley
Baskerville Sarah-Ann Granddaughter   8 Scholar Hale
Baskerville Martha Granddaughter   3   Altrincham

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Janice
The Baskerville's were still in Plumbley in 1841

HO107/92/21 pg 11

Sarah Baskerville 55 Ag (land through rest)
Harriet 30
George 20
William 15
Elizabeth 3
David 6 months
Harriet Hulme 12
all born in County.

James Baskerville 20 Ag Lab
Margaret 20
John 3 months
all born in County

I couldn't find another David.  I checked the 1841 Hale, but there are no Baskerville's on it.

Hope this helps
Kind regards
Su

That's odd, I wonder where Thomas was  ???
He's not with the family, he must have been working away.

Also you have William down on the 1851 as 36 I think that should read 26 as he was down as 15 on the 1841.

Kind regards

Hi Sue,

Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it.

I had another look at the copy of the 1851 Census, and you are right about William's age. It does read 26. (I don't know why they always seem to score things out  ???)

You have also given me the name of Harriot's mother, which we never knew, as she wasn't listed as living with her husband Thomas in 1851.

Maybe Thomas was travelling with the elusive David (Sr.) in 1841?  ::)

I do know, that we had been told by a researcher that was hired many years ago that David (Sr.) may have been from Devon. In 1851 we did find a David living in Devon, with a Harriot, but no younger David. We also found in 1851, Harriot living with her father and son in Hale, Cheshire, but no older David.

We also know that the family originated in Cheshire, as one of our family has David (Jr.'s) bible from "Bowden Parish Church". We have also been told that the younger David's birth is registered in Knutsford, and we have ordered the birth certificate to cofirm this.

As both Harriot and David Sr. were Baskerville's, it has proved difficult to try and search this family. It has been especially difficult, as we can find no David Sr. anywhere in 1841, 1851, or 1861 that fit into our line. (David Sr. was deceased before 1864 when his son got married).

As no birth, marriage, census or death can be found for David Sr., it looks like he might have existed only in the minds of his wife and son. :'(

Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Janice,

Thomas Baskerville married Sarah Drinkwater 18 June 1809 St, Mary's Great Budworth.

I'll do a bit more digging for you, I'm intrigued... this is surely one for Sherlock Hemlock  :D

David could be illigitimate and the name of his Father put as David to save face ... it has happened on my friend's grandad's cert.  in that case it was child Ernest and Father Ernest, but the family say that was because the real father wouldn't allow his name to go on the cert, although he provided for the boy.

Kind regards
Su

Hi Su,

I really appreciate all you are doing. It has crossed my mind that David Jr. was illegitimate, as we have never been able to find David Sr.

Just another "Baskerville" mystery I guess. ;D

Hi Janice
I have looked on the 1841 Knutsford but can't find Thomas or David.

I noticed on the IGI that some David Baskerville's were born in Goostrey in the late 1700's, so I looked there as well, but no luck.

I'm trying to think where Thomas Snr and Jnr could be be  ???
I've checked the workhouse and Knutsford House of Correction (luckily they weren't there).

I don't know where the Hulme's come into it.  There were one or two on the 1841 Knutsford, but I couldn't tie them in with the Baskerville's.

The only problem with the 1841 is, there is no surname index, so it means going through every village page by page, which can take forever, if you don't know where a family come from, or where they might be at that time.

I'll keep looking for them, but it could take some time.

Kind regards
Su

Thank you Su.

I can't thank you enough for all you are doing.

Who knew the name Baskerville would be so difficult to trace.
