This National Archives research guide will tell you most of what you need to know -

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=244

If you can't find what you need at the National Archives, it may be worth contacting the Garda Síochána
see http://www.garda.ie/faq.html#G6

"How can I obtain old service records of a parent/grandparent who served in the Garda Síochána?

Service Record details can be obtained from the Garda Museum and Archives Section, telephone 00353-16669998 or by email to gatower@iol.ie. Many service records for the Royal Irish Constabulary and the Dublin Metropolitan Police are also available. "

Hi Gustav,

I had to think hard about this one to remember where I got the information as this was  the result of one of my very scientific pieces of research - stick a few key words into Google and see what it comes up with !!!!!!
However, this time it worked and I found the following site which gives a short history of the R.I.C. with some good pictures and a list of names and I've checked again and your Daniel Gilbride is there, enlisted in 1871 age 20.

If you Email Iris Buckle with the name of your ancestor she will send you the LDS film reference so you can look at the original record.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/RICDonegal.htm

Its a roundabout way of doing it but OK if you know the person is definitely your ancestor - I was on a bit of a wildgoose chase and didn't find anything conclusive! Very disappointing.

Hope this helps and good luck,
Carol

Hi Carol

Thanks for the info Re: RIC.
I will do that, but i am a novice at all this. When I get the film number, can i just view it on the LDS sight, or do i have to send off for the film.

Thanks

Hi Isabel,

When you get the film number you contact your local LDS family history centre, ask them to get the film in, quoting the number (and pay them, its not a large amount) they will ring your when its in and your go to the centre and view it there on their equipment. They will keep it a few weeks so your can organise a convenient date with them. Thats why I said its a bit of a pain but worth it if you know your are going to look at your ancestors original records.

Finding your local LDS centre will probably depend where in the world you live and I'm not sure how to do it apart from your local county records office - thats how I found out where mine is, they had lots of literature. Perhaps some of the more experienced and knowledgeable people reading this will be able to advise!!

Regards,
Carol
