Phillips Family - Selborne & Crondall
« on: Sunday 19 March 06 10:51 GMT (UK) »
I thought I might have difficulty with my own name, but its proving remarkably easy. I have traced it to Selborne in 1784, and then to Crondall, where the vast majority lived. Like to hear from any posible relatives.
The Phillips married into....Easwacker, Champion, Wilkes, Kemp, Beacher, Cook.

Hello Dipper,

Your post caught my eye, listing the names Phillips, and Earwacker.
Earwacker maybe a version of Earwicker, and vice versa. I am also curious to know if you mean Selbourne, Hampshire?

Also wondered if you have seen this post, which might fit in somewhere?

Oran:

I think that there could very well be a transcription error on Ancestry.com for the census record that mentions James Earwicker (father of Elizabeth Earwicker) and born in 1786 Bowlint Castle, occ. Sawyer d. 1857 age 83 yrs.

I couldn't find any mention anywhere of a Bowlint Castle.  I had a look at the original census image, and it occurs to me that the birthplace could be Rowlings Castle in Hampshire.

I attach a small portion of the 1861 census image for Robert Phillips' father in law James Earwicker. You can see the birthplace is somewhat illegible. Although Ancestry.com has Bowlint castle, it could also be a verbal error on the part of the census taker during transcription. Maybe Rowlings Castle in Hampshire?

I am interested anyway in tracing Robert Phillips as blacksmith during the time he was in Malta. Could it be that he was stationed in Malta with the Royal Navy while a few of Robert and Elizabeth's children were born?  In 1861, Elizabeth was listed as living with Robert Phillips (father in law) in All Saints, Portsmouth. The image clip I attach does not show Elizabeth (nee Earwicker) Phillips husband Robert at the address - perhaps he is still with the navy in Malta?

I mean Rowlands Castle, not Rowlings. What was listed as Bowlint Castle could be Rowlands Castle, Hampshire.
