Austrailia British Subject
« on: Friday 17 March 06 17:35 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please explain on the 1901 Census in Carlisle, Cumberland, a Burdett Coutts age 9 visitor from Austrailia, British Subject, with Henry Edmondson and family .  Does this mean she was born in England or Austrailia, as I can't find her place of birth or anyinformation on her.

First of all I think we are talking about a boy here.

I think this means he was born in Australia & has become a British Subject.

Also I fould this, but maybe not related

Hi,

I think that at that time all Australians, born in Australia or naturalised, were automatically British subjects.  Australia only became an actual country in 1901 with Federation, before that each State was a separate self-governing British colony.

Thank you for the information, I don't know if it is a female or male the census doesn't tell me.  But  at least know I think that they were born in Austrailia, thanks biglou.

Hello Lorimer

I see from the 1901 census that his surname has been mistranscribed as Contts. But his age has been entered under the male column,so that would tend to suggest he is male  ;D
