William & James Mayo
« on: Tuesday 05 October 04 13:15 BST (UK) »
a very long shot I know but am looking for William Mayo (probably born about 1795-1800) and his son James Mayo (born 1822).  I don;t know whereabouts they were form in Ireland but they moved to Northamptonshire and James was resident in Blisworth when he married in 1842.  I believe they worked on the canals

thanks

Hi Lilyrose.

Without wanting to state the obvious, Mayo is a name that comes from County Mayo!  ;D

Sorry I can't be of any more help.  Good luck.

Hi Lilyrose,

The surname Mayo was also found in Antrim, Dublin, Kildare and Meath at the time
of Griffiths Valuations of Ireland 1848-64. Funnily enough the first names of the vast majority of Mayos in those counties were not known. One possible way to discover where the Mayo family may have lived in Ireland is to do some research into the Irish surnames in the Blisworth area.

Here's a useful list of sources that may show families named Mayo in Ireland. Unfortunately not all of them are online. There's no listing on the Flax Growers List of 1796 . Many of the links shown below are on John Hayes Fáilte Romhat.com website.
