Died at Sea
« on: Wednesday 15 March 06 12:08 GMT (UK) »
Where would I find the records of a death at sea and where it went down. Its a Steamship the SS Snowdrop and I'm pretty certain it went down in the 1890's, I don't know where or how.
I have been told that my GG Grandfather was on board, possibly the captain!.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks for that both of you.
Still no confirmed evidence as to wether he was captain or where it went down.
There has to be some record out there surely, as I believe all hands were lost.
So any further help would be brilliant.

Hi Syd!

If you're looking for information on ships and captains try the LLoyd's Shipping Register (from 1764) & Lloyd's List (from 1741) & Lloyd's Captain's List (much later) at your local library. Also try the local newspapers as they carried shipping news and the Belfast Newsletter indexes on

Syd,

What was your gggrandfathers name?

Interesting to note that the master of a steam ship called Snowdrop was summonded for allowing his ship to be scuttled for an insurance scam this was about 1864/5.

His name was James Polley
born 1851@
So I don't think he would have been master then.
