Watney Off Licence
« on: Tuesday 05 October 04 04:17 BST (UK) »
Hi all:  I have an old picture of my dad's cousin infront of what looks like a liquour store.  On the back it says H.W. Hart , Watney Off Licence, 171 Queens Road, Peckham SE 15.  This picture looks like it could come from the 40s maybe the 50s.  I have tried to locate this establishment over the internet but no luck.  Probably not there anymore or likely a different name.  H.W. looks to be about 50 in the photo.  Would anyone have any information on H. W., this place or if it still exists. I live in B.C. It appears that all of my dad's family has now passed away. He would have been 98 now.  Thank you, Alva

I think I may need to get out more!!
Well, there still is an off-licence there at 171 Queens Road, London, SE15 2ND Tel: 0207 277 5177. It's now called Best Food and Wine. It's right by the rail station.
I got all these details by googling 'Peckham off-licences' which produces a shopping guide to the area.
I know this ain't much use to you in BC but perhaps we have a local Rootschatter with a digital camera...and a heart of gold...
Watney's was a big brewery and I guess HW bought most of his stock from them

Hi Clincher:   Thank you for the response.  You are right, hopefully some Rootchatter who lives in the area can take a picture of the Off Licence. Guess I was hoping to find someone who might have known the Hart family.  It was a very large family. HW's father was one of 11 children. I'm not having much luck with finding any of them.  Thanks again, Alva

Hi Alva,

i've just joined rootschat (yours is my first post!) I am also doing the HART tree, our Harts are from the Manchester area. I don't really have much yet, but am happy to show you what there is so you can see if there is a connection.

Send me a message if you interested.

Cheers,
Kate

Hallo again Alva: The first image is attached. Tell me if you get it OK and how it compares with the older photo you have.
Since I posted the above para I've had feedback that the file was too large. The first pic is 398KB and I can't get it smaller and limit is 300KB. I'll persevere

Hi Clincher:  This was great.  It's a little blurry but maybe my son can doctor it up.  He's good with computers.  That looks pretty much like the same place.  My picture is old of coarse and in black &  white.  It has H. W. Hart standing outside in front of the door with both windows on either side.  Has old movie posters in the windows.  When I get my new computer and scanner set up I will try to send you a copy.  I sent you my email address if that makes it easier for you to forward more photos.  Thanks again for doing this for me, Alva
