1841 Census Sandbach
« on: Tuesday 14 March 06 22:37 GMT (UK) »
One of my long standing brick walls is my great great grandfather John Clare, born 1829 Sandbach. Father unknown on his marriage certificate in 1851(Sandbach St Mary) so I am looking for him and his mum maybe (but dont know her name) in Sandbach area in 1841. Any possibilities gratefully received.

Hi there franklc

1841 HO107/122/9

Wheelock Street, Sandbach

William Cockbain 60 Slater not born in County
John Clare 10 not born in County
Thomas Broadhurst 20 Joiner born in County
Harriet Broadhurst 20 born in County

HO107/122/10
Union Street

Mark Cockbain 35 mechanic born in County
Lydia Cockbain 40 not born in County
Margaret Cockbain 14 not born in County
Henry Cockbain 10 not born in County
Mary Cockbain 7 not born in County
Elizabeth Cockbain born in County

I don't know if John Clare was related to the Cockbain's or not, there was no other Clare that I could find in Sandbach, so I noted the other Cockbain's just in case.

Same goes for the Broadhursts, it's hard to say if John is related to them or not, whether Harriet was William Cockbain's daughter or not.

H0107/122/11 Sandbach is extremely poor to read so there may be another Clare on it.  I will take another look during the day time.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, you have a bit of a mystery to solve.

Kind regards
Su

Hello Su,
Thank you so so very much. What you have found could certainly be a strong possibility. I have not come across the Cockbains or the Broadhursts but if my John Clare was living with them aged 10 born out of county then that could explain why he might not know his fathers name and why I can't find his baptism around Sandbach even though on later census he says he was born there. Maybe he said Sandbach because he didnt know his actual place of birth. I will have a  look into the Cockbains and the Broadhursts to see if that gives any further clues. If you do have time to look for any other possibilities that would be wonderful. I will let you know if I can prove whether this John Clare is mine or not.

Hi franklc

I have now had the opportunity to go through the rest of the Sandbach census.  A few pages are unreadable, and I'm sorry to say I found no other Clare's, Cockbain's or Broadhursts on the readable pages.

I looked on my Marriage indexes and couldn't find a marriage for a John Clare and a Cockbain or Broadhurst.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to help you any further, and wish you luck with your search.

Kind regards

Thanks very much for the time you have spent. I have found quite a bit about the Cockbains on later census and www.family search.org but nothing yet to connect them with the Clares or even the Broadhursts. Some of the Cockbains were born in Betley in Staffs so that may be another lead. I will keep looking.
