1851 census - Manchester
« on: Monday 04 October 04 15:35 BST (UK) »
I am looking for info on Sampson Lawton (b 1799) and his wife, Amy (b 1805).  They were living in 35 Canal Street, Ancoats in 1845 and at 42 Wharf Street, Ancoats in 1855.
If any kind soul can search their records for me, I would really like to know the names of the rest of the household at this time.

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
yes I have this and the return for 1841 - pushing back (at least I'm trying to) a bit further on this particular branch.  I have, partially, managed to tie Sampson in with his siblings and their offspring.

I am still stuck with the next generation back - William Lawton & Mary.  I suspect that the Mary is a Mary Atherton but have been unable to confirm this.  As I am based in Scotland, I have not been able to get into Manchester to do some research.

Thanks for the effort  :)

Hi Des

I think we may have a connection - I have been following my grans family line (Lawton)

With the exception of missing 1851 census info I am a high percentage sure of a connection to William and Mary Atherton.

This is via

Thomas Lawton born abt 1802 (parents as above).

He married Ann Hamnett in 1829.

They had a child called Thomas born abt 1832, this is the line I have followed upto my gran born 1909.

As this lot have only just fell into place, I will hold off the jump for joy until I can confirm a few things.

If you have any knowledge of a son called Thomas please let me know.

Regards
Ken

Hello Ken,

The only info I have for Thomas & Ann is that thay had at least three children: -
Mary Lawton - Christening: 20 OCT 1829  Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire

GEORGE LAWTON - Christening: 29 JUN 1834 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire

GEORGE LAWTON - Christening: 16 DEC 1835 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire

Did you manage to find the family on the 1841 or 1851 census?  I would be interested in his occupation as the males of the family appear to have been mainly employed as bricklayers.

Hi Des

What I have is

Thomas Lawton - Christening 8th Jan 1832 Manchester Cathedral

1841 it is said he was 10
1851 Missing
1861 aged 29 Labourer (Bk Balloon st, Manchester) this is near the Cathedral)
1871 aged 39 Metal Planer (Cross st, Salford)
1881 aged 49 Metal planer (Deal st, Salford)
He died in 1886 in Salford aged 54

The only way I can confirm the connection to William & Ann is to order up the marriage cert for Thomas in 1854 - this should give me his fathers name, which I hope would be Thomas.

Full 1841 census is

Ann 40 (occupation ?)
Thomas 10
Mary 12
William 15
George 5
Ann Hamnett 70

Thomas Senior is missing, must assume he died

Send me a PM if you need the original scan of the 1841 census.

Regards
Ken
