MCAVOY/MCVOY & MCNEIL- Cockermouth, Cumbria
« on: Saturday 11 March 06 22:12 GMT (UK) »
Looking for families of these surnames in Cockermouth. Earliest I have is 1853 for Hugh Mcavoy b. 1816c in Cockermouth(although he's a hard nut to follow). he could have been given another first name though but cannot find anything of this man in 1841 or 1851, but I have him from 1861 onwards.
The Mcneil's/Mcneal's are in particular the family of Daniel and Mary Mcneil both b. Ireland but came and raised family in Cockermouth - anyone got their children in their tree's?

Would be very grateful for any info.

Thanks

Barbara E

Hi,

Not sure if it is the same McNeil  but I am a relation to Daniel born in Ireland (1929 - 1891) and Mary McNeil born in Scotland (1834 - 1887), that raised their family in Glasgow, Scotland.

Let me know if this is the correct person you are seeking.

Regards

Liz

No relation to any of these families but found this.

1841 Piece 175 Book 4 Folio 3 Page 3

Govt? and House of Correction for the County of Cumberland
St Cuthbert Carlisle Carlisle

Hugh McAvoy age 25 born Cumberland

His fortunes certainly fluctuated. 1841 in a house of correction, later in Leeds with a wife and a manufacturer ? of Flux then in 1891 in the Workhouse.

Yes, I think you have them.  Image appears to be MUCKOVOY.

Possible marriage? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NXK6-B73

Hi
its been 7yrs since I posted  on this one.
Well, I can tell you that the Hugh & Ann you found is correct, they are the Mcavoys (she was Ann Younghusband). They had a baby Hugh who sadly died (Ann & baby were in the workhouse in Cockermouth).Ann also died early.
Then after a series of events Hugh Mc (who also deserted the army twice in his early years) - met up with Mary Jane McNeil formerly Marsden(married to Henry in Cockermouth - see 1841)-
They have had a strange and varied life - my gtgtgt?? grandparents were Hugh Mc & Mary Jane -
and can't get a handle how he managed to end up dying in Bradford workhouse.
