1861 Dublin Census look up please
« on: Saturday 11 March 06 19:28 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find information on Elizabeth Westman born Dublin 1856 (according to information on 1881 UK census) She married my g grandfather in 1882 in Halifax, W. Yorkshire.  Her father was I think William Westman and he was a brewer by trade.

I am afraid there are no censuses surviving pre 1901 for Ireland. Your best option is to look via Parish records or Griffiths Valuations - although the latter might not be to helpful for Dublin. Other option is to get someone to visit Records Office in Dublin and search the BMD's for any info - they are from approx 1864 onwards.

Hi Nightingale, the only William Westman in the 1851 Dublin City Census is this one

Wm Westman of 31 Lower Sheriff Street in the Parish of St Thomas, north of the River Liffey.

No other details given. In fact he is the only Westman in Dublin in the 51 census.

I know it doesn't help with your Elizabeth but the address might be of help in your search.

All the best
Kate.

Hi Kate

Thanks for looking for me.  Can you tell  me is it possible to get copy birth certificates as I understood a lot of Irish records were lost some time ago in a fire?

May be I will have to rely on parish records.

Thanks

Anne

Hi Anne, i don't know about certificates. I would imagine that you would have to go on parish records. As you say a lot was lost, but I'm not sure what.

Kate.

Thanks Audrey - not sure if it is the same as the Elizabeth Westman I am chasing was not born until 1856 and it was her father who was William Westman. However nothing is impossible and William Westman may have married again and started another family.

Anne

I may have some information about Elizabeth although not Irish records, I afraid. And what I do have is only a possible glimpse of her in the UK before the 1881 census.

I have Westman ancestors and years back did a survey of all Irish-born Westmans living in the UK, census by census.

It is possible that Elizabeth is the Lizzie aged 15 who appears in the 1871 census living with her mother Anne and siblings William, Mary and Margaret, living 119 Grace Church St, Bradford, Yorks. Anne is a widow and they were all born in Ireland, and as they don't appear in the 1861 census they must have emigrated between 1861 and 1871.

Of course this doesn't help in going back and into possible Irish records. I have the same problem with no concrete details for my Westman ancestor before he emigrated and settled first in Manchester and then Leicester in the 1860s. Like Elizabeth, my ancestor Alexander was born in Dublin (in 1842). His father was also a William but a stone mason by trade. Also think the family came from the Mountmellick area in Co. Laois - although still to be substantiated.

Good luck with you search.
J
