« on: Saturday 11 March 06 16:43 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Iwonder if anyone can help . I have found a relative that has died in St Saviours union workhouse. In 1862. He is described as a potman .Would he have been an inmate or staff. The death cert gives very few details. Is it possible to know when he went there.are there any records . Kind regards  . Lost Tribe. :)

Hello there,

If you look on:

http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/records.html

You may find out more about Workhouse Records.

Have you looked for your relative on the Censuses? He should be on the 1841/51 & '61 Censuses...(& they give Occupation too).

Best Wishes, Romilly.

Hi Again,

Folks usually ended up in the Workhouse due to illness or unemployment...there was no Welfare State in the 1860's & perhaps something like this happened to your relative.

You could try looking at the Census entry for St Saviour's Workhouse in 1861, & see if he is listed as an inmate...

Some of these links might have something:

Good luck!
Romilly.
